Which tire size, 335 or 295?
« on: April 29, 2012 - 01:26:22 AM »
Trying to decide which tire size is better for the rear of my 71 Challenger, 335 30 18, or 295 35 18. Both will fit without a tub, and they are both around 26" tall. Is the extra weight of the 335 worth the extra width?

The car will be used for 75% street/highway/road trips, and 25% road race course on open track days.
Power is 600hp/603tq at the motor. Front tire will be 275 35 18.

Which of those two sizes are available on an OEM application? That is the size I'd go with.

The reasoon I ask is because OEM offered sizes will continue to be available for a long time to come. Boutique sizes that are simple an available option today can be discontinued should the manufacturer ever decide to change up the product line and eliminate slow moving sizes.

That's good advice by HP2.  There are a LOT more tire choices in the 295 verus the 335.

That being said I went with a 335 on mine.  Mine is mini-tubbed (there was no way to fit even a 315 on mine without a mini-tub) so after going through that expense I wanted the widest tire I could get.

275's all the way around make sense for track use, in particular because then you can rotate them to get some more life out of them.

Thanks HP2 and Travis.  HP2, both sizes are OEM - 295s come on corvettes, and the 335 on vipers.

So when does the weight become a problem?  Anybody running 335 35 18 on the road course?  I'm just looking to find out if the extra unsprung weight of this wheel/tire combo affects acceleration, braking, control, and lap times, or if the extra footprint counters all those aspects.

Go w/the 335 if you can fit them in.

What rear suspension are you going with?  No way leafs will work unless you do the 3" re-location.  You may have issues with the rear valence.

Weight is always a concern, so lighter is better, but sometimes there are trade offs that need to happen. Your talking about a 10-15# increase per corner, I'd guess, so you can probably control this with shocks. Most times it probably won't be hugely noticeable unless you're on bumpy roads. If your intend on swaping over to a 275 tire for racing, then I really wouldn't worry about it.

I'm running 335/30-18 on mine. Not tubed. Also have 275/35-18 in the front. It is just great on the street. Haven't used it on the roadrace track yet, but I will!

Also, I was thinking about using 275 40 17 on all four corners for the racing. Any thoughts?

Sorry, but a 26" tall with an 18" wheel on the rear of an ebody is going to look goofy. I have 1.5" taller tires on the back of my stock ebody and they fill the wells pretty nicely. Just my  :2cents:

Looks to me it's all in the angle of that shot. Low and at a sharp angle to the rear tire. The dead side shots in that auction make the tires look too short to me.

I like a decent sidewall on a muscle car, but I understand for auto-x you'll want the lower profile.

1.5" shorter tire than this will make a pretty dramatic difference. However I know his post wasn't directly pointing to aesthetics versus performance. The fronts are 275/45/17 (26.7")

To each his own.  I plan on 335-30-18s on the Chally.

Looks good on a Cuda too:

How did you accomplish this? I want to run 275 up front and 315 out back.  Seriously no tubbing? I thought I would have to do a 1" mini tub.
