Oh, where are you from, what condition and how much do ya want to spend? It might help to narrow
down the search. Just an AAR ? or specific year?
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I was looking for a LONG time for an affordable AAR to restore for about the same amount of coin you are (coincidentially, I'm in the military too).  Well, after years of searching, I didn't find anything in my budget.  I think you may be in for a long wait if you want to find one for what you are looking for.  That being said, there's something to be said about 'being in the right place at the right time'.  If you do get a real AAR, are you looking to do a NOS restoration or are you going to use re-popped parts?

So, what I did was buy a 72 and am in the process of making a 70 AAR clone, tribute, or whatever you want to call it.  If the VIN issue is able to be resolved, you can always make this car into an AAR clone yourself!

Cheers!

Ok, so I have tried to purchase this car three times.  Bid on it on ebay a while ago. Then from Rod after he first was dealing with the frustration of this vin tag problem. And again just recently.

Rod is a nice fella.  Talked to him for quite some time on the phone.   Very knowledgeable about muscle cars and I enjoyed talking to him again.

The car, I have not seen it. yet.  However, he says it does have the antenna hole in the right location.
I recall him saying that the number stamps are matching.
No vin, no fender tags, no build sheet. No matching motor or tranny. Originally a green on green car.

He purchased it from guy site unseen off of ebay, in Kansas.   Turns out, when it was delivered,  the pictures on ebay must have been from twenty years ago because it was not what the pictures were on ebay.
The guy who sold it to him took the vin tag, and fender tags and kept them.  Rod has apparently tried very hard to get the tags from the guy, drove down to Kansas several times trying to get them, or catch the guy
and at least try to purchase them.   No luck.

The first time I tried to purchase this car from Rod we spoke for quite some time.  Then I got the phone number of the apparent man who had stolen the tags.
I tried to contact him but never reached anyone.  I had hoped in getting the tags from the guy and reuniting them with the body.  No luck.

Rod appears to be sincere and not a scam.  I am so tired of no vin tag situations that I have talked myself out of this AAR, even if it is a deal.
With a little more cash on hand I would not hesitate to make this thing yard art.  AAR's are relatively difficult to find.

Good luck. I hope someone purchases this car and brings it back to being an aar again.  Even without the documentation.

Finding an AAR for less than 5K is near impossible.
I did say near.

10K should get you a super super rusty one.  Without matching motor, trans, build sheet.

3-5 K ones are the aar's with vin problems usually.  Time and time again.

Advice on the vin.

Car is from Kansas, went to the state it is in now, and you are trying to get it titled in South Dakota.
Go to your DMV and ask them what to do to get a new title from the feds.

They should give you a sheet with all the correct steps to take to get a new fed issued vin.
The process should be relatively easy also.
Make sure you do get at least a bill of sale with Rods full name.
Get the bill of sale notified in the local town where he lives.  There should be someone available most hours of the day.
Some states will except a non notified bill of sale but a lot of states,if not most,  require the notification.

Every state is different.
There are risks to this.
Could be stolen. in the past maybe?
The guy who kept the tags could have put them on a different car and then the feds would have to sort that out.
You in court first probably for fraud and then him for doing a rebody.
The possibilities are endless.

You never know unless you try.
If you do decide to purchase this, please make a post here so that more folks can learn how to do this successfully.
Far too many of these cars go to the way side because of this issue.

I passed on an M46 car because of no fender tag and vin tag.
He had title but the vin was thrown away.  Sad.

Well, I have not seen the car.

If the rust is minimal and your state will make it easier than other states to get a revin, it would be worth it.

Of course, I would have to make the real decision on that by looking at the car.

I have an addiction of finding cars and purchasing them.  So, I have way too many cars and I really did not need one with vin problems.
So I passed on the car.

If you really want a project and you can get that reissued vin tag than the car would be worth it.
After all, there is no other barracuda in my opinion that is as high a car as the AAR.
I know, Hemi this Hemi that, but the AAR was the race car.  No ifs ands or butts.  The race car!
Well worth it.

Here is an AAR that I rescued from the mud of a field out in Missouri.
The hunt was excellent.
The purchase worked great.
The drive was quite the adventure.
And I got to save an AAR.
Purchased it for 3800 and sold it for 4800 in the end.

It was in terrible condition.
However, it had the vin and the trans am tag.  Not the option tag.

Can't find the picture with the full  vin on it.

That might take hiring a private investigator and having him research the guy who has them.
Then maybe a lawyer? That whole thing could get hairy.  Could be fun.
I am sure Rod will give you his information if you were to purchase the car.

Vin tag issue aside.... you do realize the cost to bring this back right? 20-30K+++   easy  :-\
That's just to get it "running" ( maybe?) not brought back to original....I understand your passion to own one but reality sucks at times? Not trying to ruin your day or anything just wanting you to know or have a idea upfront what your in for.
