Check your float levels.Tha accelerator pump will only "squirt" gas when you first hit the throttle  and will not do anything while the engine is just idling if that is what you were referring to.A back fire is also a condition of the engine going lean=no fuel.

Yep! when I referred to nothing squirting out of the front pump, it was when I would pull the throttle. Of course thats because the bowl was empty

same on mine. Didn't get to tear into it tonight. Wanna do it in good light so I don't risk losing a part. Floats should be around 7/16, is that right?

Yes the floats should be around 7/16" , i usually set them a bit higher though . 
do you have no thermostat ? I would recommend a 180* not a 160 *
 Make sure you install the fuel filter on the pressure side between the pump & carb
