Here are some more photo's, 2500 rpm's at 75 mph's with a 4.10 rear gear. The car accelerators much much better, I had a 2.76 rear gear one legger. The lock-up really makes a difference. The overdrive comes in around 45 mph and 5 seconds latter the lock-up kicks in.

I mounted the adjustable pressure switch on the firewall and a B & M kick-down switch on the carburetor linkage as the passing gear kick down (comes about 3/4 throttle). The pressure on the firewall work very well, you don't have to crawl under the car to adjust the when OD comes in. I wired a 5-second delay relay to the same pressure too. So when the OD kicks in 5 seconds later the lock-up comes in. This eliminates having two pressures switches. I have the OD coming around 45mph.  I have a on/off switch with two indicator lights that show when the OD and lock-up come in.

Looks nice, I used the existing seat belt light for the LU indicator.

...just a question

I can get a 904 ( 44RH ) tranny ..will this Transmission work also ?  I have a 73 Chally with TF727 ..
Here in Germany the A518 is very hard to find...( we don´t have real good junk yards nor trannyshops..)
So I was thinking about this 44RH /904....to make the  "same "swap...

Thank you for any advise

Greetings Juergen

if you can get the A500 (904w/od) get it. Lots of 904s came in e-bodies behind 318s

A 904 will work, but its not an overdrive transmission.   Look for a A500 (904 based OD trans) or the A518 (727 based trans) in full size vans and trucks.  The vans often seem to be overlooked.  I got an A500 from a full size van I bought for $300.  It ran and drove pretty well, but was otherwise trashed.    All I wanted was the drive train.

Good luck in your search.

Juergen,

It may not last for long stock, but add a transgo shift kit and make sure to drill a hole in the tail shaft for improved OD oiling and the bigger bearing as previously noted by tactransman (maybe in another thread...), and it should perform as good or better than an A518.   The lower first gear will get you out of the hole quicker with a higher rear gear ratio.  I'm told many drag racers prefer a built 904 to the 727 due to the lower weight and rotating resistance.   If you have a mild 340, I wouldn't hesitate using it.  Just make sure your kickdown is working correctly and its full of fluid, and get the larger 3/8" fluid lines from the donor vehicle, add an external cooler as well. Heat is what kills them.

Make sure your pinion angle is correct after then install, it tends to point down more in the rear due to the tunnel interference.   May need to hammer some clearance on the tunnel.

I hope this helps, and good luck.

Thank you plumcrazychris

with your advise in mind..I will talk to the guy who is selling the tranny. He owns a speed shop here in Germany ( btw he is from the US ...   ex Army    )
So he can modify the A500 for my set up....

Thanks again

Just a quick question, how does the kickdown cable work if you are putting the A500/A518 behind a new hemi (as it is an electronic throttle pedal etc.)?  Does the cable hook to the throttle body?

I put the 518 behind my 3g hemi.  I had to use the external throttle body box.   Using a Lokar throttle cable mounted in the front side of the box, and kickdown cable mounted to the opposite side of the box (had to cut my own notch) and connected the kickdown to the throttle cable so it pulled as the pedal was depressed.   It took a little adjusting, and its still not perfect, but seems to work pretty good.

I thought that you found a A500, the 904 sized OD, not the 3 speed 904

I started withan A500, put the shift kit in and put it in.  But thought I had problems with it when I first fired up the motor without mufflers.   Turned out I hadn't filled the converter all the way, ran it 2 quarts low and may have damaged it.  Then realize Real problem was with the motor itself.  When I put it together, one of the pushrods fell down and wasn't engaging the lifter/valve on one of the cylinders.  Once I corrected that it ran like a champ.   By that time I already  swapped in a stock 04 A518 I picked up a few years ago for $300 as a backup.   I plan to add a shift kit at some point, but it's working pretty good now.   I've still got the 500 that is probably fine if anyone is interested.
