Got an NOS 3583188 waiting for my car since previous owner did some bad welding on the factory unit.

The wings that bolt to the torsion bar mount members are 0.15" - 0.16"at the edges.  The two pieces that come back to hold the trans mount are 0.18" - 0.19" thick.  However all I have are calipers, not a micrometer, and the stamping likely distorted the edges enough to not get a truly accurate reading.  Of course no idea what grade of steel its made from either.

Hope that helps.
Close enough!
1/8" = 0.125..... So the wings are slightly thicker than 1/8"

3/16" = 0.1875.....are right at 3/16" thickness for two pieces to hold trans mount.

Yup .. 3/16

I applaud the A518 swap!!!

I'm considering a similar swap, but convenient now is the readily avlbl S/S 4L60 swap.   Any pros/cons between these two trans?  I know cost for the S/S 4L60 ends up around roughly $5000 by the time its all done.

Performance?  Computers? etc?

I'm sure you can look up weights. The 518 is heavy, it's probably listedsomewhere in this thread, I haven't read the whole thing in a while.

There is no computer for the A500 and A518 prior to 96, they are hydraulically actuated.  I'm sure you're familiar with the durability of the 727, the 518 is a 727 with a bolt on OD.  They can be built to be bullet proof.

$5000!!!

Wow, that's pricey.  But it is all electronic and you can set your shift points etc.  That is literally about 8x  what I've got in my swap.  And all the stock linkage works very well.  This should've/could've been a factory option.

If you add a "professionally built" tranny you going to add a couple grand to my $300-400.  But if you start with a 95 518, and put a shift kit in it you'll be hard pressed to tear it up if you keep it cool.

Take it for what it's worth.

We'll apparently the CAD drawing I was given when I had the bracket cut out in Michigan, was not a usable format.  So I'm taking the sheet of steel with the cutout to the waterjet shop to have them trace it and create another file.  I can't even find any contact info from the place in Michigan, not sure it's still around.
I'm working  on it and will let you know as soon as I have something.  I should  at least have a price soon.

I hate to do this... because I didn't read the whole thread... maybe it's been answered

Can someone walk me through parts interchange between the 727 and a518?  I just put some big money into my 727  and completely rebuilt it myself (shafts, billet steel drum, new clutch packs, bolt in sprag, billet servos, new planetary gears, new valve body, etc, etc. etc.)

I'm all of a sudden itching for the overdrive... will the 727 guts swap over?

As far as I understand, the 518 is a 727 with the extra overdrive module between the main body and the tailshaft. I don't know if they made any little changes between the two thay might make some assemblies unusable,  though.
