I believe the internals are the same, the input shaft is possibly different and rear shaft is different totally due to the O/D section, of course the cases look the same externally but are different at the rear. Cooling pipes are larger as well.   :2cents:

Yeah I imagine the output shaft, at a minimum, has got to be different with the overdrive section.  But does anyone know how the shaft splines differ?  I'm wondering if I can put the upgraded planetary gears, clutch packs, drums, etc into one of these. 

The valve bodies has to be completely different as well, I just don't know.  Trying to see what kind of $$ it would take to swap one

Valve body is different (solenoids). The front pump and torque converter is the same if the new trans is non lockup.

So I completed this swap over the winter and tested the trans on the lift a few days ago.  No overdrive!!!  I have the OD/lockup activation kit and have verified 12V at the pressure sensors with the car running.  I verified the switches close and voltage measured at the pressure switches go to zero at about the right speed.  But no overdrive.  I also electrically bypassed the engine vacuum switch to rule out vacuum decreasing at higher rpms.  Still no OD and 3200 RPM at 65 mph on the lift.  I also tried manually grounding the pressure switches while greater than 50 mph and still no OD.  I can't really tell if the lockup is working.  This was on a rebuilt a518 I bought specifically for the swap from Transdepot.  Supposedly rebuilt and tested from them before it was sent to me.

So any ideas on what this could be?  I'm not a trans expert.  But on a separate note, the trans swap went pretty well even with the 440.  Used the ultrabell.  Modified the stock crossmember to make it work.  This post was by far the most valuable resource for this swap I was able to find.

You could wire the solenoids to a toggle switch and try it that way. That will determine if the problem is your trans or actuator setup.

Which solenoids?  I did effectively do that to the internal switches by manually grounding the wires at the pressure switches.  My next step is to take the pan off and valve body to check the solenoids themselves on the bench, but am hoping not to have to do that as it's money I don't want to unnecessarily spend (trans fluid $5/qt). 

Could the TV adjustment affect this?  The TV linkage is adjusted with the kickdown lever all the way back at WOT and the 1-2-3 shifts seem good but the car isn't under load since I'm doing the testing on the lift.

I just wanted to follow up with the problem I found in case someone else has a similar issue.  After swearing up and down and having Transdepot technical help, I found that I had the center wire and one of the outer wires of the connector to the trans swapped.  :screwy:  :swear: So I had 12V to the forward pin and the LU switch to the center...  I can't even blame this screw up on alcohol like I used to do since I quit drinking years ago....   :banghead:  OD and Lockup work GREAT now.

 Rather than go back and check for the wiring circuit I will post my copy below, hope it helps....
This circuit doesn't have the ignition switch in it, it goes between the battery and vacuum switch.

I have been thinking about the bracket and talking with some other car buddies, in which one idea was to turn the trans X member 180 degrees.  Would this be possible and use the camaro or even mopar mount?  Can anyone who has done the swap is in the middle of it, report back on if this would be a solution.

I haven't done this conversion but am considering doing it to my Little Red Express Truck and have read as much as I can about doing it obviously like you are doing now. What has been written on this thread hold valuable information, I will be using a local (Australian possibly a GM style) rear mount which I will be adapting to a rear X member I will make to suit.
