Can anyone help me with my non lock up 46rh. I swapped over a couple years ago and this site was so helpful in getting it done. All has been going well until the over drive quit working on me. turned out it was a short in the wire inside the trans. While I has the valve body out to replace the over drive solenoid I put in a transpak shift kit. I got all back together and it all worked well and shifts were much better.

Well now there is a new issue. As stated before all was working well until the other day when the trans would lock up when manually shifted into first. I put the cuda up on the lift and shift in to first and the trans will not turn the tires When I shift to 2nd and 3rd trans works fine. when I put it in reverse it seems to drag a bit before the tires will turn.

By the way linkage is working fine and trans selector hits all detents.

So I drain trans and pull the valve body and the second gear accumulator drops out in three pieces. Well I think bingo. Its a plastic one that came in trans. Well I got my old 727 out and pulled the accumulator out of it and its a cast aluminum. Bonus right. Well I put it in and put it all back together again and I still have the same issues.

So what would cause these systems. Thanks.

Any chance you adjusted the front band & got it to tight?  Sounds like it's holding when it shouldn't be...

I have adjusted both bands with two different torque wrenches. Still binds in First. Thanks.

Digging up this old thread again, it is pretty much a resource that keeps on giving. Anyway, I am considering doing this conversion myself, and found another way to control the overdrive and converter lock up points. It looks like Compushift makes a stand alone unit that controls both electronically. The plus side appears to be that it is not effected by low vacuum, plus the head unit can be mounted, and adjusted in the car. The one downside I see is if you have a carb, you need their TPS unit that adds to the cost. Link provided below.

That looks interesting, Doc.  I just emailed them to see if it can be used with a 42RH trans as well.  I will report back.

Since the A500 and A518, are operated identically, then the controller would undoubtedly work for it as well.  This looks like it would be great, but would add another $500+ to the swap.

It would be better if they had a controller for the later/better 42/46/47 RE.  They are way more available and have all the durability updates the earlier RH's didn't have.  That would be the hot ticket.

Just confirmed that the electronic control will work with the 42RH as well.  We need a TPS system so that is about 130-170 more depending on what carb you have.

Chris, did you finish your trans mounts?

Why is a tps $130-$170? I would think a 5v linear potentiometer would do it for pretty cheap.

Id like to do this swap on my small block Warlock.

Yes I've had it installed for 4 years now.  Works great.

Goody - That TPS is one that is a plug n play with their controller.  I guess if you are electronics savvy, you can make one cheaper.  If you already have one as your vehicle is fuel injected, then you are good to go.

Chris - Do you have plans available to make the mount?  Do you just cut it out from a piece of flat metal and bend it up to the correct shape?

Yes just cut it out of flat stock and bend it up, bolt it together and paint it.  I'd planned on cutting them out and selling them, but I haven't gotten the time to get it all taken care of.  I'll make more of an effort to finish it and get a cost for them.

Been reading this guide for a year or so now. Got a 46RH non-lockup from a pick a part (3500 van) to put in a 300C behind the 392. Thanks for all the great information.

So I've been running the A518 behind my 5.7 hemi for nearly 10 years now, but one thing has bothered me the whole time.  The LU on the torque converter stays locked when I take my foot off the gas causing engine braking....    Its not a huge thing, but is irritating.  Everything else works like factory.

I'm wondering if anyone else has figured out a way to unlock the LU when you take for foot off the gas so it free spins?   I would think some kind of TPS, or micro-switch on the pedal or linkage would work well, especially if your using a carb, but with my factory throttle, I haven't come up with an answer.  I am using the stock throttle pedal.

Anyone have any thoughts on how to unlock the LU?

Sorry, I can't help with the knowledge, but I'm interested in the concept and look forward to seeing where this goes. Good luck!

The whole idea of having a LU convertor is to effectively have a solid connection between the engine and output shaft of the transmission like you have on a manual or stick shift. It is dangerous to have a transmission "free wheeling' while mobile. Some kits have a vacuum control switch which will release the OD back to the standard "top gear" or 3rd if that is what you are looking for.
