727 to A518 swap – a novice guide

Awesome thread. I too want to do this as 4.10s make my cuda unhappy on the freeway.
A couple questions. Has anyone used a shift cable to make the slap stik work instead of the factory linkage? Also, what happens if you shift the Od switch in first or second?

:clapping: Great thread. <snip>

Thanks Terry.  Coming from you, I really appreciate it.   Your input helped me get motivated to set my sights on this swap.

The 3 pin tranny is easy to find and the pressure switch setup you mention looks simple enough to tackle...    it loooks like a keeper!

Hey Drew...  I know people have switched to cable shifters but I don't know if anyone has documented it.... Maybe the "Grand Daddy" thread listed in refrences on page one will have someone who mentioned it...  they might be willing to describe it.

The OD won't engage until it's in third gear if the switch is on early... it will engage right away though and you won't get all of 3rd.  I've forgotten about being in OD coming off the FWY, came to a stop and the car was okay.

:)

I'm wondering what Rory would recommend for a converter.

I understand you want a stall speed a bit less than your cruise rpm?

In otherwords, say I have a 4.10 rear, 26" tire, and a .75OD reduction going 65MPH.  My RPM is roughly 2657 RPM.  Does that mean I want a converter say at 2500 to avoid excessive slippage?  Since I have a non-lockup converter, this is especially crucial???

There was dicussion about this in another thread somewhere. IIRC, a 2500 rpm converter flashes to 2500; at 50% throttle, it would engage at roughly 1250 rpm, so you should be fine.

Finally finished this swap this weekend.. That trans mount from Rory is a real beauty, I did have to drill a hole on the back side for my e-brake equalizer bar, other than that it is perfect. While I was at it I also installed new Hooker Super Comp headers and a total new exhaust system. I am running a 400hp Mopar crate 360 motor so had a heck of a time figuring out the torque converter required.. Finally figured out the Mopar Crate 360 is internally balanced, unlike a normal 360 that is externally balanced. Using a 2000 stall lock up converter with shift control from the governor port and a vacuum switch.. Runs super smooth on the highway and brought my rpm down to 2000 at 75mph. Over 5mpg improvement in fuel economy so far... I am using the same cable shifter and cable kick down system that I had on the 727, works good so far..
Just wanted to say Thank You for your excellent write up's. They are what gave me the courage to try this myself..

Got any pics?  Do you have a lockup or non-lockup 'verter?

Rear gear is a 323 and the tire size's are 245/40/18 front and 275/40/18 rear..   Speedometer is absolutely dead on with a 33 tooth yellow gear..

This is a great thread and it should be a sticky, I am looking at doing this to my Little Red Express Truck seems as it is an auto with 3.55 rear gears. I have been looking around the net and asking many who should know but not too many are willing to pass on this info, thanks.
I will be using the PATC setup for the OD & LU control but I do like the adjustable switch idea just in case the change points are a little off.   :2thumbs:

That's soo cool Scorp!  I'm glad it worked out and you're happy.
My 'Cuda is taking two trips this weekend and the OD is starting to pay me back in gas money.

Thank you, I really want to see pictures of your conversion when you start it.

Enjoy!

Aussie, A518s were factory options in 90-93 ram pickups. I think It is darn near a bolt in for your truck. A driveshaft, might be the only thing that would gave to be custom as shortbeds and  stepsides were pretty much dead by then
