I would add that any trans you do pick up should be gone through pretty thoroughly. On mine the case was cracked internally, wouldn't have caught that just throwing it in the car...

I know exactly what you mean.  When I was doing mine I ended up taking it out and putting it back in three times in four days trying to get it ready for the Spring Fling car show out here in LA.  I was physically a wreck at the end of that last install.

So far the lashup is working great.  The OD works like a champ.

hey guys i have a few questions and you all seem to be pretty dang knowledgeable i have a 1988 Mitsubishi fuso fe434 it has a Chrysler transmission which i believe is the 727. I'm not 100% certain but I've been to two Mitsubishi fuso dealers and can not get any info on this truck other than a trans part number me601603 and they called it m2a3 they couldn't tell me or find parts or anything more than that. from everything I've gathered by looking at a million and one dodge forums  it is the 727 it has one 3 wire pig tail going to it for reverse lights and neutral safety switch. here are the numbers i found on the left side front PK3836130 9722 8169  these numbers i found on the tail section with a Chrysler stamp 3496595   and 11596. now this thing is screaming at red line at 60 mph it's a 3.3 diesel. if i were to put an A518 in it would it bolt up the same as this trans and because there are a few different config of bolt patterns and i'm not really sure which one i have. i just really need OD or something because hearing that engine run like that is like nails on a chalk board after a few mins going down the highway. this is a service truck and all said and done will probably be weighing in around 10k pounds. will the A518 hold up to the weight? also my tail section looks nothing like any i have seen for any of the mopars. the lock bolt for the retainer clip that holds the speedo gear in is all the way at the top where as the others i have seen are at the bottom. this truck is boggling my mind. i appreciate any help i can get.

Yes they can hold up. Early cummins motors used them. Just have a good diesel guy rebuild the trans
Post a pic of the trans. That would help I'd it better or google the numbers you posted and see what you come up with

Mark, if you're using a late model Hemi with drive by wire, you are running a computer too, correct?  If so, why aren't you running the 545RFE trans that comes behind the newer Hemi's?  I have a 2004 5.7 Hemi in one of my Jeeps and also use the 545RFE without issues.  It's all in the wiring and PCM.  Mating an old school transmission seems like way more work than using a late model, computer controlled trans.  I mean, you're already running the wires and computer so why not use the transmission too?



Just a quick question, how does the kickdown cable work if you are putting the A500/A518 behind a new hemi (as it is an electronic throttle pedal etc.)?  Does the cable hook to the throttle body?

Isn't your car a big block car?if so how do you like it?
I like it a lot so far, but if I had to do it over, I would go with a GM based trans like the keisler unit or a 5/6 speed manual. There is so little aftermarket support for these things, it's an exercise in frustration....
70 Cuda, 7.0L Gen-III Hemi, Viper T56 w/9310 gearset, 3.91's, Megasquirt MS3x v3.57, Innovate wideband, Firm Feel upper arms, torsion bars, springs and strut rods, QA1 DA shocks. I did everything on this car except the fancy paint stuff and I drive it...and I can't seem to stop messing with it....

Hi BKilby,

The only prob. with the new trans is that it doesn't fit in the tunnel and I do not want to cut it.  I don't mind "massaging" it some to fit, but I do not want to cut it up.  I would like to use the new trans!

I didn't think about that part.  Looking at the trans I have sitting here, it does look bigger.  Next time I have my car in the air I think I'll take some measurements for my own curiosity sake.  Sure would be nice to use the newer trans though.

All the 518s I'm finding are from 318 small blocks which I believe use different flex plates and stalls that won't work on my 360, is this correct? Should I keep looking for one hooked to a 360?
And will my linkage from the 904 slapstick work on the 518? Or do I need 727 linkage?

When I was researching this, the year of the tranny determined if I could use my existing torque converted, etc. 

I honestly don't know what the linkage looks like from a 904...  there should be a way to compare them online to see if it is close.  Jack the car up and take a look as compared to the pictures I posted...  post what you see... it would be interesting.

My car used to be a 340/904 with stock linkage from carb and the slapstick.  When I changed the engine to the current stroker, I changed the carb to a Holly and the kick down linkage to a cable.  The slapstick linkage bolted right up the the old 727 I had after the 904 as well as the A518 I currently have.  I don't know the answer to the flex plate and torque converter Q.  However, I believe you can use the same flex plate but not the converter.
