With a 17" rim, a 5" backspace is probably safe. Dig through some of the threads here. There is some good info on both 17" fitemnet and drop spindles.

With 2" drop spindles, you may want to contact Hotchkis about returning them.  Maybe call and see if they will take them back after you install them (if need be) so you can try them.  Somebody mentioned he couldn't get the jack out from under the car (with what I assume were stock spindles) unless he had the adjusters all the way in.

I don't think you'll need the drop spindles with the Hotchkis torsion bars. Hotchkis was even refunding folks some money because the cars sat so low in the front using their torsion bars.

If you do keep the drop spindles, you'll want to watch out for tie rod interference. The drop spindle moves the tie rod back near the lip of the rim, instead of having it sit inside the rim like it usually would with a 17" rim. I have 17x9's with a 5" backspace on the front of my car with my MF drop spindles, it clears but its a little cozy. 17x8 would give you some more room, as Doomed pointed out with his 5.5" backspace.
