440 PUSH RODS
« on: May 10, 2012 - 03:20:28 PM »
I bought a set of push rods several years ago.  I got ready to put them in my 440, I noticed I have eight that have a bigger, beefier rocker end than the other eight.  Same length, same size cup but more material around the head only.  Do these go in the exhaust or intake arms?  I could not even tell what kind they are because as I said I bought them several years ago.

Ray,

Makes no sense to me , the spring pressures should be close with both valves , the only time I have seen real differences in spring pressure is when you are using a blower it becomes harder to close the intake valves . The exhaust pushrods have more clearance to the head , the intake pushrods are very close to the intake port so using larger pushrods can rub on the head .

After giving this some thought...... Maybe because of the high lift cam that I once had and the Crane ductile iron adj. rockers, the pushrods may be different to allow for clearance between the rocker arm that is immediately behind the adj. screw  and the pushrod tip.  Not sure though.  I have since bought a new cam and plan on using the pushrods, but would still like to know why they are different.
