Pulls Left?
« on: May 11, 2012 - 03:18:44 PM »
I had the front end lined up 3 years ago. Since then I've added disc brakes, gone from 14'' to 15'' tires and played with the height of the front end.
It now pulls left and the steering wheel is turned a bit to the right as I'm going straight. If I'm going down a slightly crowned road, it will roll up the crown even after I give it a little correction to the right.
Sooooo, I brought it in to have the thing corrected. When I got it back, it did the same thing. The guy said to bring it back in and he would swap the front tires left to right and right to left. That may have helped a little, but it's still off.
Should this be so hard to correct???

If the alignment checks out, you may think about jacking up the front of the car and then starting it up to see if the power steering (assuming you have power steering) is pulling it.  Hang onto the wheel as you start it, but then let go and see if it pulls itself to one side.

There is a valve body on top of the power steering box (with what appears to be two round holes) that should be adjusted forward/backward to correct the power steering pulling to one side.

Or a binding caliper if the steering box checks out.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Did he give you an alignment sheet???   I'm very good with the numbers, If you could tell me what they are?   toe doesn;t mean much as far as a pull, but Caster and Camber is very important.   Most shops don;t take the time or the care to get is very correct. becauce most people don;t know better, and most alignemnt sheets can be changed to green to show it good even when its not, I;ve done 100's of alignments

the first mistake is using the factory specs intended for bias ply tires , , you want to max castor & tip the top of the tires in at the top about 1/2* & set toe at 1/16 "

I jacked up the front end and fired it up. The steering wheel did not pull at all.

I agree, but it would be nice to know were the shop set his #'s, your right factory specs mean nothing, but where they set his caster and camber mean alot, also I've seen set back and SAI cause pulls, if the alignment was done on a good alignment machine like a Hunter there would be a print out with everthing on it?

Does it pull harder when you apply the brakes?

Also, have to double checked your tire pressure?

My guess is you need a new alignment guy

Are your tires worn incorrectly or do they look good no cupping or uneven tread wear?

My guess he is at max ajustment on something :dunno:

Chryco,
I'm going to a new guy to fix my front end. I want to share the info you gave me, but I want to make sure I know what you meant by 12*.
Is that 1/2 degree?

Yes, CP meant 1/2 a degree.
Make sure that your ride height is set the way you want it (and level between sides) before you go. Same with tire pressures. Make sure they are measuring the thrust angle, SAI (Steering axis inclination) , TOOT (toe out on turns -ackerman-), etc. too. If you can post your measurements before and after there are a number of people on the site that can help.

If possible ask the mechanic to test drive it with you after the alignment. He should be able to alter the castor to help negate away any pull he notices.

Good stuff Gentlemen. I have an appointment for 7:30 Monday. I told them I'll wait while the work is done. I HATE to leave the old rust bucket unattended. I prefer to be present for any '' TEST DRIVE ''.
NO.... I don't trust them to go play in my car.......
THANKS for the info!

When you changed the height I assume you turned the torsion bar adjustment bolts, right? Since the lower and upper control arms have different length, adjusting the bolts will change the camber. I lowered my front and had eventually to switch to Moog offset bushings. Cam bolts could not be adjusted anymore. I had really weird handling before that.
