Rack an pinion on original k-frame.
« on: February 09, 2005 - 07:39:16 PM »
I was wandering if any one has ever put a rack and pinion on an e-body Cuda Challenger. Using the original k-frame?   :???:
My gear box needs rebuilt rather than rebuilding I was thinking about rack and pinion.

I was looking at a couple of hot rod and I don't see any reason you can not put a a rack and pinion in the place of the gear box and idler arm.

If I get a rack that is the same length as the center link arm and mount in in the same location as the center link.  Do you think the geomentry angles will work?

Thanks

It can be done , not nessisarily easily, by leaving the rack at the rear & using stock spindles oyu will not mess up the steering angle , you will need a STRONG support yo hold the rack to the K frame though & the biggest consideration is having the inner tie rods close to the same width as the mounting points for teh lower control arms to minimize bump steer problems

rear steer works fine with ourt spindles , Mopars are designed with rear steer , front steer racks are waht cause the problem as the spindles are not designed to do that
make sure when ppoking for a donor rack that it si ai rear steer rack or you will turn the wheel left & go right using a front steer rack
