Engine having problems.

Well i took my 65 Barracuda out for a drive yesterday to go mothers day shopping for the wife. It was kind of warm but not too hot. Well i had to drive 10 miles to the mall and parked in the parking garage. Well came out and about an hour after being in the mall and tried to start it, and it wouldn't start for a good 5 mins. I was able to drive it home and when i got there I turned the key to off and it started to to putter out and making some noises, I am completely new to fixing cars and have no idea what to check. I am cleaning the air filter out today. My step dad says my timing is off a little but he did not have his stuff to correct it while he was here on a visit.  Well any info would help thanks.

Well, if your not mechanically inclined, and don't have any propper tools to repair or diagnose, then you may want to take it to a noteable trustworthy shop.  Sounds kinda like a fuel/vapor/ carb bleed down situation to me, flooding it out and fouling plugs, but I do not have a clue as to what engine you have, what condition it is in, if it's modified or anything else.  It can be multiple problems. You need to give as much history info on your car n egine as you know, to go any deeper with a diagnose from anyone here.

Points, or electronic, 2 bbl, or 4 bbl, old fuel in rusty tank, high mileage on engine with stretched timing chain, fouled spark plugs.....you get what i'm saying?  A bad set of points, ballast, bad cap, rotor, coil, or alot of other things can be an issue. Fuel and all it's componets can cause issues.

The car as far as I can tell is one good shape. The engine is 318 v8 It has 80000 miles total but the engine was rebuilt 5 years ago. I do notice when I have the vents open there is a high smell of gas vapors on me, and that is just me driving a few blocks. I just fueled it up before I left for the mall and the owner fueled it up for me when I picked it up.  It is a 4bbl, when I drove it from where I picked it up I did notice oil on the the bottom of the inside of the hood. I tighten the bolt that I found loose and that seem to fix though there was a little oil but not near as much as when I found it the first time. That is pretty much I know as of now. I guess i will have to take it to a shop. Do you reccomend me driving it there? It just seems on long drives It has a turning off problem because it did do it when I first brought it home.

I wouldn't tell you to drive it to a shop .   It could be winter blend fuel in hot weather, but you're saying you smell fuel vapors worries me as well.  It takes 1 spark to ignite fuel.  Float sticking may be the problem, or even a bad fuel pump. I don't know where you are posting from as far as country, city, state area.  There may possibly be a member in your area willing to come check it out for you that is a mechanic.

I do know that you may be hurting the engine if it is dieseling after you turn the switch off.  I recomend protecting yourself and your car by finding someone with knowledge to come check it out, or have it tow'ed to a service shop. If your in Panama, a very good Mopar mechanic is just a call away.....HEY CHRYCO :wave:

Thanks for the response, I live in Lincoln which is in northern california. Looks like I am taking it to the shop sometime.

Try another post asking if any members in your area. There are members here from N. Ca. and may be close enough to answer your dilemas and get you going.  Of course, you may still have to shell out a few bucks, but I don't feel that is an issue you are worried about.  Most here are not scalpers and are willing to fellowship with other members close by. If I was close, I'd ask for directions now :wave:

I would make sure you have a 180deg thermostat in there, put a spacer under the carb (to isolate heat/cool carb), maybe check to see if you have the proper plugs in it (maybe the plugs are too hot).

Sounds like a lot of heat problems with vapor lock on startup (after driving) and dieseling at shut down.

Thanks Plum for the input really appreciate it. I just got done looking around under the hood to see if there are any major leaks, I found a pretty big oil? spot that was cake on under this engine part, I am not sure what the part is called so don't laugh LOL. Trying to learn on the fly. I have attached some pics so maybe you guys can see if this might be one of the problems. The first pic is of the part, and the second pic is where i found the substance. I rub some off on my finger and smelled it.

the part with the red wires coming out of it is the dist & cap , the base of the dist is where the second picture shows , the most likely place to leak is the back of the intake so you may have to pull the whole intake & reseal it

Thanks for the info, do you think this is the main culprit when it comes to smelling like gas after a drive? To me it looks like it is leaking pretty bad.
