something else to think about is the cost of refridgerant . The factory model is R-12 which is hard to find and very expensive  and the aftermarket is probably 134-A (cheap).  Last time I picked up a tank for the shop it was close to $600 (30 lb)and 134-A is like $2.00 LB. !34-A isnt as efficient but it suffices to keep ya cool. And the R-12 to !34-A conversions are not, efficient, cheap (if done right), or very cold .

SMS does VERY nice work. I found this on the tech section of Mopar Muscle and thought I'd link to it here. They visited with Classic Air and went thru the rebuild of a heater plenum. Very cool the way they bead blast the fiberglass case, then clear it to bring back the gloss and restore the color. I would have never thought of that.

Ck it out:

What issue of MM is that article from?  I have a ton of issues and I don't recall that article.

Update...If any of you are running a small block and want to change over to the Sanden compressor, Bouchillon performance makes a compressor mount to fit the small block with factory A/C where you can keep your original setup. The other company's units will fit but you need to add extra's and have non ac pulleys. I have decided to keep mine just like the factory with the exception of the compressor. I can post a pic of the mounted compressor if anyone is interested.

I have the Sanden mount kit for the small block Mopar. I had most steel parts chromed. Kit includes add-on crank pulley, belt, idler pulley, brackets and all hardware. I didnt realize it wouldnt work with my engine when I bought it. The thermostat housing interferes with the back of the Sanden compressor

Here is a pic of the Sanden Compressor on my small block. I like this setup because I DID NOT have to have an idler pulley or add a pulley to my crank. All I had to do is get the bracket and compressor. I still need to get the discharge and suction lines updated. This way I can use the original style lines and run them in the factory locations. Of course like I said before, my car had factory A/C.

I like the design and would like mine to share the same plane as the dual pulleys on the alternator. Bouchillon uses two model Sandens, the 508 and the "shorty". Yours looks like the shorty. Where can I find dimensions on the shorty? I bought a nice polished 508 and it is a bit too long in the places I am trying to put it.

actually, I want to do like Rev and Redlines setup with a twin belt running the alt and compressor. Thats going to require a 2V water pump pulley that would run on the same plane as the two aftmost grooves on the 4groove crank pulley.

Has anyone seen a 2V water pump pulley setup like that?

Yes I have the "shorty" compressor. I have yet to see the dual belt setup on the smallblocks. I have put 2 cans of refrigerant in the system and everything seems ok, no belt flopping around like with the RV2 compressor.

I put in a whole factory A/C unit in my non-air 70 RT. I copied all of the holes off of the air firewall and cut the holes with a saber saw back in '86.  No welding required! The only thing you notice, if you know to look, is that I don't have the lip around my blower motor, on the firewall.   I decided to add air back then when I was sitting at a light one summer day, with my 440-4sp Challenger thinking that I was hot sh!t, when a plain jane 318 stock looking Cuda, coming the other way, turns left in front of me with his windows up.  I suddenly realized that I was very HOT with a wet t-shirt on. I was lucky to be able to start collecting parts back then when Challengers and cudas were in almost every junk yard back then. I even bought a complete 3 speaker 70 dash assenmbly with ralley guages and all of the vents, switches, wiring out of a CONVERTIBLE 70!, for $500. I still have the dash in my car now and it never cracked!    (those were the days!)

I want a setup that will look more like the factory setup. Not sure how this will work but it looks like I would have to have a one off waterpump pulley made to start. Also, would have to configure or fabricate my own custom brackets to mount the compressor (loads of fun) I know I have seen adpater plates to mount the Sanden using the R4 brackets. Has anyone done this or got a pic of this Am curious if the dual v-groove Sanden would align and match up with the dual pulley on the alt?
