My daily driver (1996 Mercury Cougar) is starting to consume oil.  The 4.6L V8 has 216,000 miles on it.  Once in a while you'll see a puff of smoke from the exhausts on start up.  There is a slight oil leak from the oil pan and possibly from the rear main seal area.  The engine runs smooth as silk and does not knock. 

I'm using 1½ to 2 quarts of oil every 3,000 miles lately.  I do not want to put any money into the engine, so is there another way to help rejuvenate the engine with its leaks and oil usage?  Is there some type of miracle stuff to pour into the crankcase?  Can't blame me for asking.

  No but maybe adding some slick 50 may help seal your rings at least, there are many new blends of high mileage engine oils as well whatever you do!!  Do not degrease the engine if you are finding external leaks unless you want to deal with them right there..

I`d just live with it, or rebuilt it  :2cents:    Most additives will cause bigger problems in the long run.  1.5qrt  on 3000mls isn`t that bad.

When was the last time the PCV valve changed?

I  agree w/ the pcv. Most of the seal additives are a mixture of something with brake fluid. The brake fluid swells the rubber seals
and makes them deteriorate more quickly. And changing the valve seals just plain suxs. I would just buy
oil when on sale and nurse it along as long as you need to. Time to buy that new Chally.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

 :iagree: with the pcv and filter system, but a couple of other issues may be involved to. A catylatic converter starting to go bad will cause back pressure or even a baffle in an old muffler colasping. Also the oil returns on the heads could be plugging up and holding to much oil on top of the engine. Which could build up over the valve seals. It can also cause a false oil level reading on the dipstick since it would take a while to drain back into the pan for the correct reading.  Fairly easy issues to resolve.  These issues are not un common either.  If you plan on keeping the car, it's worth checking into.

I've got 35,000 miles on the PCV valve.  Do ya think I should change it?  I use 10W30 oil every time.  The exhaust system is 100% original.

A stuck closed PCV valve will cause excessive crankcase pressure resulting in leaks past oil seals and gaskets, probably not why you see smoke at startup.

As far as the oil seals go get some ATP AT-205 reseal. You can buy it from Rock Auto, Amazon, Autozone, ect. It DOES NOT contain brake fluid and does not harm or deteriorate the rubber seals. This stuff is the real deal. It was developed by NASA and forms a molecular bond with the rubber. It is compatible with any oil/hydraulic system and can be used with the power steering system or automatic transmissions as well. I have read NOTHING negative about this product. I have used it in all of my older high mileage vehicles and it only takes about 5 hours of drive time to start working. An 8 oz bottle is less than 10 bucks. Well worth it. I would not recommend something that I don't use/approve myself and this stuff really works and isn't a gimmick or harmful. Check it out for yourself. see link below!!  :thumbsup:

I changed the oil today and added 8 ounces of AT-205.  I found a local auto parts store who carried it, so i didn't have to order it online.  I have driven about 1½ hours so far.  I looked under the car for the usual wet spot and saw none. I will check again later today and will update the status. 

Bullitt....I will also change the PCV valve very soon.
