Fuel tank, sending unit for Gran Coupe
« on: May 18, 2012 - 07:26:23 PM »
I removed this from our 70 Gran Coupe,

and I assume that none of these parts are around in reproduction,

so what do, or have people done with this set up?

the tank is to rusty to save IMO but perhaps some  bright minded people  here  have some ideas   , I kinda need one   :thinkerg:

Perhaps this web site can get you what you want.  I wouldn't be surprised if someone in the forum can sell you one cheaper.

All kinds of places to get this stuff. Try Roseville and tell them you are a member here and get a discount.  Google sending unit and gas tank for your application and you will find many dealers.  But Roseville is the place if they have it.

I want to say those are still available through Rock Auto, but I might be wrong.

I think Rock Auto is clearing out their stock of these items and I think when I checked 2 months ago you could get one for $80.

Ok I have located a new tank cost is not an issue ,

but finding the same tank that came in the car is what I need,

and I will have to cut the new tank for the extra sending unit,

and make a gasket ,so when I get the new tank I will go from there ,.

Thanks guys for those sites they will come in handy in the next few months  :burnout:

Hmm, are you saying the tank you took out is not an original tank? and you have to cut a hole to fit another sending unit?  Must be a special application you have there.  The repro tanks should almost be like original.

From what I can tell this is the original tank,
Yes these tanks and sending units came on SE challengers and Gran Coupes ,

so as you can see the factory had a hole on top for this unit,

and I cant find any tanks with the hole, also my concern is it looks like they just threaded it right in to the steel with no backing plate.

 so it did leak,

I am not sure exactly what I will do I have cleaned up the sending unit and it still works and is a pretty rare part,

I just need a plan to do it right or not at all :dunno: :clueless:

So you're saying that the gasket was in place, but it was leaking?

gas tank ~ one of these should meet your need.

Pretty much all your fuel line needs can be found at Year One but better deals can be had from members here in the forums.  I just list these items to show you that all the stuff your looking for should be readily available if you look in the right place.  That is what makes this forum so helpful to me.  There is alot of help on where items might be found and how to put it on your car when you ask.  Even what upgrades you might add to your car that others have tried previously so you make a better choice when you finally move on the items you need to do.

So you're saying that the gasket was in place, but it was leaking?

Yes there was a gasket and it was covered in goop like epoxy/glue and it did leak ,and the bolts were loose ,so my plan is to make a steel plate underneath and weld nuts to that so it will have some structure .

I will post up some pics later

I would hazard a guess that if there's a lot of stuff that represents an attempt to seal the joint then either the tank or the lock ring is bunged up somehow. There shouldn't be any sealant there at all. I know a lot of people have also had difficulty getting the lock ring to tighten completely. There's a tool made for this, and if I knew where mine was I'd send it to you.

I did not know that Gran Coupes have the sending unit in that location.  I thought all Cuda tanks were on the driver side forward part of the tank on the side not on the top corner.  Very interesting.  Is that due to the overhead console low fuel light?  I thought that was just a relay unit that turned on the light.

yea I thought it would relay off the dash gauge ,

but here it is and I have a pretty good idea how to install it on a new tank,

 but yes quite the surprise,

and it has to be there , I would like to see another Gran coupe or SE chally just to see how they work and not leak,I t leaks due to the fact it just threads in to the sheet metal and the bolts pulled though and lost it seal,

so I will weld a steel ring with nuts on it and seal it up with solder and get the specific size gasket and it should work fine ;)

Would you mind posting a photo of the driver side of the tank?  Something is peculiar here.  Looking where your sending unit is now, looks like some fabrication was done there.  I still have doubt that is stock.  C'mon GC owners, speak up and tell us where your sending unit is.
