Your tank should look like this:  http://www.goodmarkindustries.com/p-17109-tank-gas-70-barracuda-wo-ecs-1-vent-pipe-on-side-2422-750-70.asp
Not sure if you have ECS or not.  In your photo with the one vent pipe, it looks like w/o ECS.
What size motor was the car originally with?

Ok, here is a Ebay link that shows multiple photos of the tank.  Looks just like my 70 Cuda tank.  See where the sending unit goes on the driver side.  I was able to change mine w/o dropping the tank.  I have a feeling your fuel lines were moved and tank was modified.  That is why I want to see the driver side of your tank.  Is there a fitting there for a sending unit or do you have 2 of them?  Your new tank look like this?

:iagree:  This is what I've been getting at all along. It sounds like mods were made to your tank.

Ok here are some pics, what I want to know is on an SE or Gran Coupe , are there any people on here that can look to see if there tank has a hole in it for the extra sending unit?

Is your car an SE or Gran Coupe? if not then that might why your is different

and how does the  low fuel light in the overhead console get the signal.from this sending unit or from the dash gauge or perhaps a relay>?

I am not sure if this tank was modified or this was the factory unit :clueless: :dunno:

I'm no help!!  My tank was swapped before I bought my GranCoupe. Mine was a LA car and it has a vapor vent line hooked up to the passenger side of this tank. There are 4 nipples off the passenger side of the tank 3 of them are blocked off one goes to the vent. I have a sending unit with a return line and the plug for the sending unit comes down right above the current sending unit so that tells me that that is where the factory had the sending unit on the drivers side of the tank.

I assume the low fuel light works , and can you look in your trunk and see if there are 2 wires coming from the tank? orange and yellow is what I have,

now you have me thinking,I have always wondered how the light works,

in the Manuel there are some diagrams that show some of the wiring but not all  .

I know the door ajar works with door plungers, but how does the seat belt light work with a timer? or a sensor in the seat because my seats dont have any sensors in them and back in the day some might have removed them

Yes, your tank was modified for some reason.  The low fuel light works with the existing sending unit that sends a signal to the Low fuel relay.  I use to have a 70 Challenger RT/SE and only had one sending unit.  Looking at your tank, I can see "goop" all around that corner to make the hole for the second sending unit.  You have the right tank, just do not need that second sending unit.  Do you have an auxillary or 2nd fuel guage?  Maybe that is what the sending unit was for.

One last observation.  The sendiing unit on the side has a fuel outlet and electrical terminal.  Was there a wire attached to the electrical terminal????  If not, than that might be why the person put in a second sending unit (so the fuel guage will work).  If there was a wire attached to both sending units, than I can only think you have 2 fuel guages.  The sending unit on the old tank looks like a 5/16 one with single outlet.  That is what you will need that I would put on the new tank.

Thanks  tman  , AND EVERYONE ELSE,

I have it sitting here and I have been looking at all day and the more I look and wonder ,the factory wouldnt have done it  this this way.

it failed I am sure and they gooped it up. it is a Stewert warner sending unit

and the other sign is the insulation is hacked off,the sending unit gives off weird ohms. more like running a gauge than a light.

so I am going with out cutting the tank, thanks I really need some one that has had one of either SE or GC and now 2 people confirm this, good no more brain storming     :banghead: :cooldancing:

Glad to have this forum great knowledge here  :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

Its possible the original sending unit failed to send signal to the guage so the other person put in the 2nd sending unit.  I think that is much more work than necessary.  If so, I would get a new sending unit unless the original one works fine.  So at least you do not have to fab up something for that strange sending unit and start out fresh with a tank that will work and not leak.  Good luck!  And CP is right, one blue wire to the sender.

Well I have had the car since 99 and I now remember some one carved up the dash and put in sw gauges

so after further review the amount of rust on the elec. connector on the factory sending unit made me assume it wasnt used,so yea alot of work just to have the different gauges.

perhaps a failure of the factory unit :dunno:who knows all I know like you said I dont have to fab up something , dam glad I posted this so now I know, and yes now I have do dig out my wire harness bin and look for the blue wire :clueless:I hope they didnt hack it out but I most likely will get a new harness some time soon ;)

It just seems like such a strange thing to do, even if the factory sending unit failed. I suppose that if 1) the factory unit failed, and 2) the owner didn't have the money to buy another, but 3) already had a sending unit from another vehicle, and 4) had a LOT of time on his hands with nothing else to do, it would make sense. Or, he's like my friend Chris and did it just to show that he could.
