Power Steering Pump - Missing
« on: May 25, 2012 - 11:31:47 AM »
My 73 Challenger was missing the power steering pump when I got it - is there any way to to determine what type it came with? On that note - I need to find one with a pully, any recommendations?

Car is your basic 318 - I plan on putting it back in drivable condition in the near future so need to start collecting parts

Thanks in Advance!

It had a Saginaw pump on it with a solid pulley.(pulley not spoked like the earlier years)  You can buy complete pumps with reservoirs at a local parts store.  They won't come with a pulley though.  You'll have to find a used one.  I don't know if they are repopped....even if they are, they'll be more expensive then a nice original one.

Does the car have A/C?  I don't know if that changes the pump style or not.

Thanks, nope - no A/C - checking the parts houses I'm seeing two types for my year car. Saginaw and Federal/Chrysler - since i have to buy hoses and pully anyway - does it matter which one I buy as long as I getting matching hoses?

I got the brackets from Chris/BIGSHCLUNK a couple years ago - I assumed they would fit either pump type. I honestly can't remember...

I wouldn't bet that both pumps will work on those brackets.  You're still going with a SB in the car right?  Yours should have a Saginaw.  My 73 318 car does.  Post a pic of your brackets and I'll tell you if they look like mine.  I don't have a nice closeup pic of my pump.  I can take one if you want to see it.

Going to stay with the SB for now, would love a picture if you got one. Working on trying to find a pulley too. Proving to be a little harder then I expected...

The 71-74 pulley's should be finned types.

See small block pulley's.

The pulley in 422STROKER's pictures is the correct one for 73.(non finned)   That's what my pump and brackets look like too.

:iagree: Definitely what my 73 looked like when I bought it. Admittedly it was 4 years old at the time, but it was pretty much unmolested.

I'm sure I have the pulley and brackets if you need them or one or the other. Make an offer and sure it will be fine. Thanks

When my car had the original 318, it was the finned type.
Were there possibly 2 vendors with different pulley's they put on?

Nothing would surprise me, and that sounds pretty reasonable.

So riddle me this - if the brackets and pulley match the pump - does it matter which I use on the car? That is - are the hose fittings one the gear box the same regardless of pump type?

That would make it easy, since I could just buy either one and as long as my brackets match the pump I should be good

They will both work. If you are concerned about originality, you'd want to do some research and verify what came on your car. If you're not, get one and slap it on

Thanks for the picture, I'll compare the brackets I got from Chris to your picture - if they match I know what kind of pump I need.

Next question will be finding a pully once I figure our the pump type..
