Challenger Hood Edge Moulding - how many are there?
« on: May 26, 2012 - 07:57:35 PM »
I've seen listings for 70. 70 TA, 71, and 72-74? I know the 70 is different, but are there really four different mouldings, or is this the same thing as all the people who put "HEMI" in their ads so the people who don't know any better will think it's something special?

Thanks, Dave. Are the 72-74 mouldings available in polished finish? I think I've only seen them in primer.

As I have only owned one Challenger I am unfamiliar with the trim you speak of.

Do you have any pictures of the trim?

72 - 74 are primer since they get painted to match the painted header panel.
My first challenger was a 72 340 auto B5 with black top / guts and black strobe stripes.
A polished one would not match the car.

Are you thinking of going polished trim on the hood and then something like 'Bare metal foil' for the header panel trim around the lights?

Something along those lines, yes. Dan Zimmerman used paint for the same idea. Having looked at a lot of 72-74 Challengers with a TA-like treatment I'm firmly of the opinion that something needs to tie the entire front together. On 70s/71s with the bright moulding, these tie in to the headlight bezels and bumpers to accomplish this, so I'm looking at duplicating that look.

So, the next question is, are the cross-section contours of the 71 piece different than the 72-74? If the 71 piece is just a bright version of the 72-74, then I can just use a 71 piece.

As I have only owned one Challenger I am unfamiliar with the trim you speak of.

It's just the piece on the leading edge of the hood.

Ok, so this is not the wide trim molding that is rare that lots of folks are looking for?

No, not the wide mouldings, although those do the same thing re: tying in the whole front. These are just the standard piece of trim that every Challenger has.

Take a look at 70 grille pic and see how the hood trim, the bezels and the bumper form a grille surround. That's a great look, and something that's lacking in the 72-74s.

corect only in primer.

Thanks again. One more question: Do the 71 and 72-74 pieces have the same cross-section? In other words, is it the same part with just a different finish?

Believe it or not, i think the cross section is different from 70-71 SS to body color ones of 72-74.
Just would be odd if they were the same. I just know the skewed logic of Chrysler's engineering and design back then would have made them different by design. I could be wrong..
I do know the tail panel trim is different between 70-71 SS years and the 72-74. Totally different section.

When I painted my 73 header panel, I used a silver metallic wheel paint (very small metalflake) and painted the leading edge of my header panel, and front hood trim.
I wetsanded it slightly, then cleared it. Shazam, it appears like the tail panel trim.

The header panel area that houses my grille and trim rings are also painted.
We call it K-Black(Kurdy black- don't ask me how it got that name, I have no idea).
It's the dark metallic finish featured on the 2010/11 Jeep Liberty flares and fascias.
I helped develop this color as a hybrid between argent, dark argent and black.
My tail panel will also be painted K black.

Hope this is helpful..
I seriously have to get the formula for K black up here.

Hey, Dan. Somewhat off topic, but it's my thread, so what the hell?  What are you going to do with the sad mouth bright trim? To me, this is the biggest problem I have yet to solve.

As for the hood edge trim, it occured to me that, by definition, the hood 70-71 has to match the 70-71 headlight bezels, and the 72-74 has to match the header contour, so I think you're right.

I cured the "sad mouth" by vinyl wrapping the trim piece with 3M carbon fiber film.
Coulda powder coated it or painted it I suppose.
I painted the grille satin or semi-gloss black.
