Stearing wheel shaft
« on: May 29, 2012 - 07:52:26 PM »
Any thoughts or recomendations if its normal or needs some work? When you grab the stearing shaft that connects to the power stearing unit , I am able to pull up and down on the shaft and it makes a clunking sound. Now it does not move much maybe a 16th , but at slow speeds I can hear the noise that is made when I pull up and down on the shaft. I also can get it to move a little bit by pulling up and down on the stearing wheel while in the car. It is def. not a tight sound it feels and sounds lose?

Should I rebuild the unit with new bearings or is there an adjustment or is it just a 40 year old car and I am exspecting to much?

Thanks in advance for any help...

If it just the shaft moving the bearing under the turn signal switch & or the c clips that hold it that are not in place properly .
If it si the whole column the brakets under dash are loose

Also loosen the 3 bolts on the firewall ( from under the dash and adjust till the shaft is riding in the center of the tube or at least so it's not rubbing on the tube?  :2cents:
