Lets talk mufflers

So finally got under my cuda to get it going again after over a year sitting in my garage.  I used to like to take it down the drag strip quite often but now I really just like to cruise.  Currently it has a 3 inch exaust and Flowmaster 40s.  While it does sound mean, I am considering a more tame sound. 

What mufflers do you guys run that are not FM 40's that still sound cool. Magnaflow? Dynomax?   What about Borla mufflers?  Other Flowmasters?

I am running Dynomax super turbos and love them. I had flowmaster 40's and hated them.... but Cudaguy put them (my old ones) on his car and loves them.  :bigsmile:

I am running Magnaflow mufflers on my Challenger and love them! They are the only muffler I will run on my classic Mopars.

Opinions are going to be all over the place.  I have two FM 40's on a BB Dakota and they are way too loud but I like the sound.  I have one FM 50 series on my 01 Durango and I love it.  It sounds strong at idle and when you give it gas but is quiet with no droning while cruising.

I had a race series Magnaflow on a 02 Stratus and really liked the sound.  It did drone at certain RPM though.

I think your best bet is go listen to sound clips from all the different manufacturers.  That's the only way to make an educated decision.

Burdar is correct: opinions will be all over the place. 

Dynomax Super turbos are definitely my favorite muffler.  I put them on my 70 Cuda 340 stroker with TTI's 2.5 pipes.  They sound incredible and they have no droaning sound at all.  In fact, a friend of mine liked them so much, he put them on his 71 Challenger 440 wih 3" exhaust. 

I also have a stock 68 Cuda formula S 340 and I decided to use Magnaflows because they had the dimensions I needed for a factory look.  The magnaflows sound great too but there is a droaning sound on the highway.  Not too bad but you know it's there.

You won't be sorry if you go with Dynomax Super Turbos.  Hope this helps.

 I have the stainless Magnaflow kit ( 2 1/2" ) on my Challenger and am very happy with it. It's quiet when your not to heavy into the throttle and has a nice sound when you are!  :2thumbs: perfect for my tastes!
I had Borla's on my 455 Buick and they were pretty quiet? Too quiet for my liking, and I don't like them too loud either.

I think the Magnaflow or Dynomax mufflers are the choice if you want something on the more quiet side (but still flows well).

I am planning on getting Dynomax's Ultra Flow straight-thru mufflers when I get my new engine installed.

I will echo what others have said about the Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers.  No drone at any rpm level.  Still plenty loud enough to be a cop magnet.  Edited out of video is visit by Mr Officer.  He just came over and didn't bother me, but was glad I had resisted temptation and didn't have fresh rubber all over the rear quarters.  Video shows idle and then drive away to about 4,000 rpm.  This is a mild 440 with TTI headers & 2.5" x-pipe exhaust to go with the Super Turbo mufflers.

440 idle at 80 degrees

I've run TTi X pipe systems with Dynomax Super Turbos on two different cars.

The first was a 69 Charger running a 10.6:1 471 BB stroker and 1 7/8" headers with 3" exhaust.

The second is my 72 Road Runner with a 10:1 410" SB stoker and 1 3/4" headers with 2 1/2" exhaust.

Both cars sound awesome. Charger got pretty noisy going down the highway though. With similar gearing the Road Runner is much quieter at speed. I think the key difference is the pipe diameter.

Getting off the subject just a bit, if you think you need 3" exhaust, I would strongly recommend 2 1/2" tails. Gases have condensed enough by the time they get through the mufflers that 3" pipes are overkill and only add to the noise level. The smaller pipe diameter will actually keep the gas velocity up and improve scavenging.

I have the 3 inch magnaflow kit on my car and wish I would have went with the 2.5.

It sounds good but it's to loud

That's interesting. I've always wondered whether the 3" Flowmaster setup I scored (free!) was overkill. At this point, it probably is. Anyway... Currently I'm just dumping out at the mufflers as I haven't gotten around to buying the 2" exhaust tips.

So... you're thinking that I could increase the back pressure velocity a bit by stepping down to a 2.5" pipe after the mufflers?

I'm not sure what you mean by "back pressure velocity", but scavenging is a function of velocity and mass flow rate.  To get good scavenging, you've got to keep the velocity up. Cooler gas means higher density which means a smaller diameter pipe is required for the same mass flow rate at the same velocity.  Twenty years ago I could have done the fluid mechanics equation to show this, but brain rot has set in.

That being said, you get into restrictive compression bent tail pipes, this theoretical stuff pretty much goes out the window.
