Rear axle leak
« on: May 30, 2012 - 01:19:47 PM »
I have pulled out the rear wheel axles because there was a small leak. After I replaced the seals and drove the car now it leaks a lot and from both wheels. I recently switched the differential and now I also feel a vibration when I drive. I have no idea why this is happening. I think I have a 489 but not sure what ratio. This is the only thing left to do on the car so I can finally drive it.
Thanks

:iagree:

Also did you set the preload on the axle bearing when you reinstalled the axles? No preload will wipe out a tapered roller bearing, I've seen the aftermath of a bearing failure, that one ruined the axle tube.

I had a similar issue after I replaced an inner seal... It just kept leaking and I had no idea why... I did some research on 8-3/4 rears and found out that I needed to adjust the play in the rear end using the adjuster on the passenger side axle.  Tightened it up to specs (I think .01-.20 inches of in and out play is acceptable) and what do ya know, the leak stopped.... give it a try

Yes it was replaced, however as far as preload not sure that was done. Can someone explain to me what that means, not sure if it was done. Also I replaced the differential from a 489 to a 742 (had no choice) since when my oil leaked it messed up my pinion bearing. The thing is that the left side was repaired and now both sides leak.

See the bottom row of pics. They are using a dial indicator but I don't think that is necessary.

Can this be the cause of a vibration I feel while driving?

I'm sure it could if the play was excessive... call me stupid but I don't use a dial indicator either, I just get a tape measure and eye ball it, making sure to put it on the tight side

Ok I checked the play on my axles and they come out about 1/4 inch, also I noticed that I do not have a retainer installed on the right wheel. Guess this is the cause of the leak and maybe the vibration I felt when I drove the car.
Thanks

Please tell us that you are getting NEW bearings when you put this back together. With the weight of the car moving those axles in and out on the bearing races I surely wouldn't trust them.

do you have a clutch type or cone type sure grip_ Posi?  If you have a clutch type and it is missing the pin in this link, then you can not adjust your end play. They do fall out when you remove the chunk out of the rear end sometimes. They are found cheaper than this link Im showing you. This is for a reference for you. Also if you have taken the axles out, the pin can fall out

Helo, I tightened the retainer on the right axle but the left side axle is still lose (has play of about 1/4 inch) it appears that the right side is as tight as its going to get. My question what do I do now ?
