Cuda Exhaust Tips?
« on: May 31, 2012 - 10:13:13 AM »
I am in the process of relacing my total exhaust system on my 71 cuda 340. Have TTI ceramic headers to instal in the next few days and then taking car to muffler shop for them to instal a SS Magnaflow boxed system that I ordered for the car. I cut off my old exhaust system which looks like it was probably just made up / pieced together before I got it and it was 2 Inch. My new system is 2 1/2 inch. I took the exhaust tips out of the pipes and was intention to reuse them, not to bad a shape, but I now see that the tips appear to only be 2 inch at the attachment pipes?? Just wondering if this will be a nightmare to fit the 2 1/2 inch new exhaust to these 2 inch tips and if anyone has had a similiar issue and how things turned out?? :clueless:
I wonder if I just need to bite the bullet and get a new set of tips?? If so where is the best place to order from??  I see TTI has the slip on 2 1/2 Inch stainless tips on their site and they are pricey!!
Thanks!
"Tim"

Is your attchment pipe on the tip offset to one side and kind of curved or dead center on the tip?  Mine is offset.

Looks like you will need to get the TTI or this may be an alternative (see link).  Based on Mflow design you will need to slip on the exhaust tip, or weld it to the end of the pipe. The alternate ones do not look like slip on with clamps like the TTI's.   Gonna be spendy anyway if you want the stock looking tip.  Too bad Mflows don't offer the stock tip to install.

Thanks for the information. Looks like maybe TTI it will be. Just a question though does anyone know why some of the tips are made offset with the attachment pipe curved while others like TTI's are made with the attachment pipe in the center of the tip??? :clueless:
Seems to me that it would be easier to line up the exhaust system to attach to the tip if it's centered??
Thanks to all who replied. Much Appreciated.

Tim, a few years back I purchased the TTI system along with the tips.  I ended up re-using my original tips but kept the TTI tips in the box.  Let me know if you are intertested in them.  Maybe we could make a deal.

I have no experience with these, but Summit is showing the following tips that go with the Pypes 2.5" exhaust system for E-bodies.  There is another part that the site describes as Cuda but those are the quad tips for a Challenger.  Much lower cost than TTI, so it might be worth a call to Summit to see if these really are for the Cuda?

Here are the Challenger tips that the site incorrectly identifies as Cuda tips:

Those could work, depends on Mflows design if their rear pipes are centered with the valence cutouts or offset like stock units.  V02, where do your Mflows exit at the rear valence?  Are they dead center to the exhaust cutouts or offset like stock design?  That is your delimma.  That will determine which tips to get.  You mentioned yours were "offset", but were you talking about your old exhaust or Mflows?

dont know if its absolutely necessary, but I clamped my tips on so I could more easily remove the rear valance in case I need to pull the gas tank, or whatever back there.

I got my tips at B/E&A   $224.
They were pretty good ones. They buffed out well.  A little curve on the top outside edge.

HEADS UP on your Magnaflow kit!
« Reply #11 on: June 01, 2012 - 04:36:53 PM »
Hey Woody9512... HEADS UP on your Magnaflow kit!  Hopefully you won't have this problem.
I'll keep short and to the point....
I bought the 3" Stainless Steel exhaust kit MAGNAFLOW PART# 15852 for my 71 Cuda, 340, 4 sp from Summit Racing. I polished the system to even more of a shine.  Prior to test fitting.  :nono:
The system does "NOT" fit 4 speeds and "through valance" tailpipes!!!
The "X" portion hits the reverse linkage. The tailpipes not only turn down prior to valance but are curved wrong over the axle.
I went rounds with Magnaflow (trying to save Summit the trouble)educating them that their system would not fit and ask for a resolution.
The customer service guy and the top Sales manager at Magnaflow told me "too bad" and to "take a hike" (No kidding!, I was shocked). They said they had not run into this before. We verified correct part number and schematics.
I told Magnaflow that they need to change the website and notify their vendors. They did say they would look into changing their website details and application and notify the vendors. riiiiiight!

Anyway, Summit Racing re-imbursed me for custom fitting of the tailpipes and having the reverse linkage fabricated.
Summit was awesome. They helped me find a shop that had the special mandrel bender.
That is customer service!! Magnaflow sucked!  :swear:

Is it a possibility to have your old tips expanded to 2 1/2 id ? I know custom muffler
shops have the ability to expand pipe, just don't know about the tips.   :dunno:
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Was sorry to here about the members problem with the 3 Inch Magnaflow system...that sucks and too bad about the customer service :villagers: And yes mine is also a 4-speed 340 71 Cuda as well so I hope the linkage hitting issue won't be a problem?? I'm hoping for the best with my 2 1/2 Inch system (Part #15851) and hope the shop can get it on without any real issues? The muffler shop I'm going to use is actually a dealer for Magnaflow, although I bought the system elsewhere for much cheaper, so I'm hoping all goes well. The system, I know when I ordered it, will have has turndowns and is not actually made for the cuda valance so I hoping they can do some limited custom work to fit it ok? I broke down and did order a set  on TTI slip on tips so I'm hoping all goes pretty well.

Let's hope it works out good. The shop that did mine quoted $250 to cut, modify, insert additional SS pipe. It was a lot of work and they definitely didn't make anything.  I paid them a little beer money for the effort. :) the welds were superb.
If you have the linkage issue, let me know. I think my guy made a second one for a template in case someone else hits this same speed bump.  If not, I can drive to his shop and he can use mine.
