Pounded out another set of engine mounts!!!
« on: June 03, 2012 - 06:49:07 PM »
Looks like the 'Cuda destroyed another set of engine mounts. 2 weeks ago in Med Hat track drag raceing and felt a shake as the car went through the traps. Couldn't see anything wrong or out of place and blamed it on the 10" wide front tires probably not the best for this. The shake got a little worse as the weekend went on. Finished the weekend, put tyhe car on the trailer and brought her home. While doing a little test and tune (just installed a M  single plane and 1000CFM Holley) on the backroads the shake started to get more and more violent at lower speeds. Put her back in the garage, jacked it up and noticed the header tube sitting on the idler ball joint. Upon investigation found the Poly Loc mount rubber peeling away and the mount flattened out.

Any suggestions on mounts and or how to prevent this from happening again. This is the second set of mounts in 3 years.

There have been a few posts on this lately.  Some guys have installed bolts through the mount to limit the travel so they don't tear.  I'm sure someone will post a pic of it shortly.

Yeras ago I had the same problem.  I put a solid mount on the driver's side and left the rubber mount on the passenger side.  The solid held and the rubber helped reduce vibration feedback.  Worked good for several years.

No torque strap - I've heard of guys chaining the engine down but that is a little crude. I just checked Jegs and Summit and neither has a torque strap. Mancin has this one that bolts to the sway bar mount - any thoughts or other options?

Unsure if I want to use a solid mount as the car is also used on the street. I already spend enough time chasing rattles   I will take this into consideration though as it seems to make sense.

Thanks Brad - I always have a better feeling about a product when some that uses it recommends it. I believe that the Mancini one and the one you are useing is the same one. Mancini part# MRE-TQBE, Engine-Swaps # TBQE and both look alike. I think this is a must purchase upgrade.

Thanks again  :ylsuper:

I got a piece of 1" x 1/4" aluminum strap for like $6 and cut to length, heated and twisted and then drilled one hole on the mount bracket. It's been on the Cuda for 8 years and I have a 4spd too..

Vin it looks good as well. I did manage to find the one mentioned by Brads70 in stock in Calgary today and is now in the garage awaiting install. The engine mounts however I could not find local so are on a plane (no patience) from Mancini  They should be here Wednesday - should be back on the road this weekend.   :bananasmi :burnout:

So the poly lock mounts failed ?? Or were they a different brand? I assume Classic had the part ?

Yup the Poly Locks failed - purchased from Classic last year and you are correct Classic had the torque strap. Carmine and Brandy are good people - I try to buy a lot there if they have stock but sometimes find it easier to fly the goods myself.

Yeah I have Known Carm & Brandie for years now , good to deal with for sure !!
I am worried about the mounts failing though , I though they were supposed to be fail proof interlocking mounts

Ya me too I just ordered a set from Schumacher. Currently I'm using their torque strap and stock mounts in the 440 , but I figured I should upgrade to the polylocs when I install my new 451"  :scared:
