1 pc amd trunk install
« on: June 03, 2012 - 11:11:34 PM »
I took the plunge and got a  Amd 1 pcs from summit racing after my disapointment with the two piece trunk floors. Once i had the old trunk cut out i wasnt happy with the fitment of the two piece n doubt id be happy in the end.

This site and its members  have always been good to me so I thot I would post a few pics of installing a 1 piece amd trunk without removing the tail panel.. Its been a topic that dosnt have much info or pics. I had to remove the rear crossmember anyway and that just made it easier. So far I have the panel place in and fitted..

All in all it was pretty easy slidding it in. The whole time when I was chopping the rest of the pan out to fit the one piece I kept telling myself itll work.. All I had to go by was vague post that just said they saw a guy or they heard that it could be done. But im happy with the fit and quality of the pan now i just have to spot weld it in.

Ill post some more pics as it progresses. Just wanna give someone that will be in my place at one point some hope and momentum to get going.

Nice Work!  I'm still contemplating to replace my trunk or not...It's patched up pretty well, but obviously doesn't look stock...

Did you also replace the trunk extentions?  Do you have any more pics of the work in-progress?  I'd love to have a look!

Thanks, and keep it up,
Kevin

A bodyman told me that you have to cut the quarters of a cuda to install a 1pc.  Is that true?

It took me awhile to jump into replacing the trunk. If you plan on doing it and have the time it'll go quick. But college and work eat up alot of my good hours of the day.. I hope.to jump back on this weekend..

I didn't replace the trunk extensions those were solid and still usable.

As for having to remove the quarters on a cuda not a 100% sure but i think if you remove the trunk and the rear crossmember you shouldn't have trouble slidding it in like i did. Just have patience make sure the old trunk is completely gone and it should go in no problem.

I will post some more pics soon. I'm debating. If i should purchase. New gas tank mounts or not..

I'm facing this myself and really appreciate your sharing this.  I'll add my request that you include as many 'in progress' pics you can as I'm trying to decide if this will be my first attempt at serious body work or if I'll let the pros do it.

Thanks, Jim

Jim im a newbie to body work too. Just plan it all out and have the right tools. Spot weld cutter, die grinder, flap disc sander and air hammer are my right hand at the moment. Its not the easiest task but it's doable. I will try to have more this weekend

Removing quarters is overkill.  Unless they need replacing anyways.

Great job in removing the cross-member.

However, if no need to replace the frame rail, then just cut the trunk pan where either the left or right frame rail is.  Then, when you butt-weld, you won't see it from underneath and just smooth out the top-side.

Some have removed the whole tail panel, but that too seems overkill.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm about to tackle the same thing. You removed the the mount for the trunk latch too correct? Also do you have anymore pictures from the install? I'm debating on patching mine or doing a whole new trunk floor.

Edit: nvm I see he was last active in 2014 lol

I removed it,  made it way easier for me.  I also welded the fuel tank brackets on before sliding it in.
