    Something that has always bugged me about the cuda is how hard it is to put gas in the thing. The newer pump nozzles (I'm in CA.) don't fit in there, especially since the license plate flips up and blocks the nozzle from sealing against the filler neck. Pretty much the only thing that works for me is getting the nozzle in there as best I can, then pulling the boot back so the pump will start and then resting my head on the trunk lid and listening for the telltale gurgle when the tank is close to full - oh yeah, and also while only holding the fill handle about 1/2 way because anything more than that and the air blows gas back out the filler neck. I have all the vapor/EMS stuff hooked up on my car, all the lines are clear etc. I'm thinking about reversing the license plate so that it hinges from the bottom, maybe that would let the fill nozzle boot seal and keep gas from leaking out everywhere??

    So do you have any hints on how you fill up without some strange ritual??

    Get some gerry cans with the long screw on nozzle attachment fill em up take em home and fill up there. Pain in the arse but works.

    Yes, those California "vapor recovery" nozzles are a pain in the ASS to fill your Cuda (yes I am in California as well). I usually place the nozzle in at a 90 degree angle to the ground and then twist slightly so the tip of the nozzle is pointing down the fill tube.  Then you have to stand there the whole time you are filling the tank.  That works the best for me.
    Although, some services station nozzles won’t seal at all and you have to hold the vapor recovery nozzle as you stated.

    My 70 Gr Cpe Conv came from Ca.  The license plate bracket opens from the top.

    I dont have ridiculous cali nozzles, but I do have to bend down and carefully fit the nozzle in there, and its a little ritual that I kind of enjoy.
    Reminds me of the times when lots of cars filled from behind the license plate.

    most of Jersey has those. i don't care what kind of old car you have, they're a pain. we do have some gas stations that have these





    they work much better. and i always pump my own gas (for those who know about Jersey)
    and i always hold the nozzle in. you'd be stupid not to. cause the second you turn around, that's when
    it happens. gas everywhere. i do have a nice long funnel and prefer a can, but usually that for the Cam2. :naughty:

    The CA. 1st generation of vapor recovery fillers had a cone shaped wedge half way on the the tube.

    One day while filling up, it became stuck on my Cuda. I lost my cool and fought it with frustration wrestling it.
    I broke the whole nozzle off and it fell into the gas tank. I found the broken off piece many years later inside when I replaced my fuel tank.

    That day, the gas station owner came running out at me.... :swear:

    All of the vapor recovery nozzles are a pain in the rear. Although I suspect the Challenger filler is easier to deal with, you still have to stand there the whole time because the nozzle won't lock into the filler like a new car. And with the flip cap I have on mine, the vapor recovery sleeve gets caught up on the flip cap mount. Its just a pain.

    I would agree with you on doing this, but they even messed with the gas cans here, they have a valve you have to hold open while pouring in the tank (the small vent cap part is eliminated) which is a LOT of fun when you are using a 5 gallon can. Sounds like I'm not the only one with this problem. I guess Ill try to swap the license plate mounting so it opens from the top and see how that works.

    I know it has its upside, but for me I'm glad I don't live in California!  My aunt has tried to get us to move there for years, and although the hotrod heritage would be a plus, too much downside to me mostly revolving around an oppressive overly intrusive state government.  But hey, some people probably like that! :grinno:

    Maybe Im just a hayseed hick but can someone explain to me WTH a vapor recovery nozzle is or what its purpose is? Never seen one here in North Cackalack

    I like the adapter idea.  Maybe you could get the upper part of a fuel neck from a wrecked newer car.  That would allow you to connect the recovery style nozzle.  Then modify the other end to engage the stock filler.

    The recovery nozzles capture the fuel vapors so they don't go into the atmosphere.
