mopar alternator
« on: June 07, 2012 - 12:24:29 PM »
I bought a square backed alternator from 440 Source.  Once I got it I realized it has an internal regualtor, my 70 cudas wiring harness has a firewall mounted regualator.  What mods do I have to do in order to use the new alternator as far as wiring and how do I go about doing it, to save me the trouble of sending it back.  The brackets are all the same.

1970 originally used a round back alt.  The square backs started in 72 I think.  My 73 still used a voltage regulator on the firewall though.

you should have 2 connections , the large terminal for output & a smaller 12v feed wire , you can use the blue field wire for that

Well lets start here , do you have 2 terminal on the rear of the new alt ? Sometimes they convert to 1 wire so all you need is the heavy output wire , you may have 3 wires & the second small wire maybe a ground for the reg.
You no longer need the external reg so you can either leave it in place & tape it into the harness or cut the plug off at the blue wire & remove the green wire completely .

It has two smooth blades that sit on the back.  It has the main bolt terminal for the main power wire.

It also has a longer small bolt sticking out the back as well aside from the bigger main terminal bolt. that looks like it should be for something but I am not familiar with this at all.

are you sure it is internal reg ?
DId it come with any instructions ?
Typically you have a green wire to the reg & a blue wire feeding 12v to the flat spade terminals & the heavy wire to the alt output .

It has a tag on the outside cautioning the user to unhook the neg. cable before installing in order to not burn up the regulator and I also verified that with 440 Source.

I never heard of an internal regulator for old Mopar alternators, but maybe some aftermarket manufacturer are building those. Why don't you post a pic of the connections from your alternator?

O.K. Sorry for the delay but viruses slayed my computer.  After 511 viruses and total meltdown I am back.  So.... My alternator looks exactly like the one Burdar posted.  Heres what I think happened.  I think I have the same alternator everyone else has, EXTERNALLY regulated.  I posted a pic. of it on this post.  The tag reads "failure to disconnect the neg. battery cable will destroy the regulator and void the warranty"  I might have assumed this meant the alternator had an internal regulator, but the tag might have been referencing the firewall mounted regulator.  Then I called 440 Source (which I have had excellent luck with) and ask them.  I could have gotten a tech who either misunderstood my question or really did not have a clue and he gave me some bad info. especially considering that 440 Source does sell an alternator package that is internally regulated and has instructions on how to convert your wiring harness.  Thats what I think.  What do you guys think????
