Rattle with no solution?

Take everything out of the car that you can.  Spare, jack, anything in the glove box / console.  Have someone drive with you and find a road you can get the noise / rattle to happen on consistently.  Keep going over the road making the sound until you find out where it's coming from.  I've rode in the truck and upside down in the passenger seat to track down a rattle. 

Any thoughts about the shocks? Maybe best to change them as they did sit for 10 years..?

Have you checked out the upper rear shock mount holes?

If the shocks when they were first installed weren't tightened enough; the bolt would wallow out the bolt thru holes.

Just take them off and drive around.  Won't hurt anything and doesn't cost you a penny to see if that's the issues.  The way you describe them it doesn't sound like they are bad, but easy to check.

my front shocks were 38 years old when i changed them.  they were not making any noise. 
changing yours would be good maintenance.

 Maybe double check the bushing on the exhaust mounts. Mine had a rattle like that also.

You could check the rear tranny mount and cross member. I know the rear tranny mount can rattle when it goes bad. I hope you find it.

...When driving slow (in a long drive way )  there is a rattle sound coming from the tranny tunnel ( or the middle of the car to the rear....When you hit a bump at low speed I hear a clunking or a "can rattle sound ". thoughts?

As for the "rattle" at low speed on smooth tarmack;
Check your lug nuts?
....maybe some joker has put a rattling stone inside one of your your dogdish capsules?

The "can rattle" when hitting a bump....
The upper part of the rear shocks can sometime hit sideways against the shock lower part.
.....kind of like a drinking glass upside down in top of a pole...
A tab of "rubber-glue" between the parts will remove this noise....

also if you have anti sway bars,...check where this is connected to the car "frame".

General solution;
Throw a small person inside your trunk,...and keep him there until he can figure out this strange sound...

General solution;
Throw a small person inside your trunk,...and keep him there until he can figure out this strange sound...

Don't forget to feed him once in a while!   

That actually is a good idea, I used to do that alot, but only with trusted people...    Bring a Snickers bar in case....


If you can get the car up on a lift, just start grabbing things and shaking.  Try to duplicate the sound with the windows up and down.  If you hear it the same way with the windows up, it's in the car.  If you hear it better with the windows down, it's outside the car.

Also, place your hand or someone elses hand in the area where the sound is coming from to see if they can feel any vibration/bump against the floor to isolate if it's a tranny mount.  If it's a tranny mount, I wonder if it would make the same sound going from drive to reverse?  My brtoher's old Trans Am had a bad tranny mount that only made noise when doing about 25-30mph around corners, a lound banging under the console.
