Big Time spoiler: Do not read if you have not seen the flick.. It is 25 yrs from this Prometheus movie to the 1st alien movie. Looks like the Engineer bomber ship in the 1st alien movie had it's cargo get free and a facehugger got the engineer navigator. The Engineers were all on a mission that failed horribly. If you look at the floor in the 1st alien flick it is melted out next to the navigator and his chest is burst out like something got killed there but it implanted the navigator 1st. There are lots of these types of ships according to the movies android at the end. This planet LV423 and The planet from the 1st alien LV427 are in no way connected other than the superseed goo that creates the perfect lifeform the Alien, somehow got out and nearly wiped out thier entire race The goo , ( that cannot be contained ) will mutate any lifeform into a seed lifeform that will attack/lay the egg parasitically that creates an alien or hybrid of the alien seen in the films. They were gonna use the goo on earth as we somehow were inferior , a threat, or did not hold up to thier expectations, or just as food for the next more perfect creation the aliens. The derelict was thousands of years old according to the movie alien and around 2000 yrs old in prometheus. So 2000 yrs ago aliens that engineered the human race were gonna wipe us out with aliens. These engineer aliens are human but more modified and advanced but still have our flaws as they destroyed themselves with thier tinkering and playing God. Who knows maybe the predators are thier creations and thier enemies too thier rebellion is probably why they seek to wipe out thier ealier creations with the alien Xenomorph!
