Hi Guys,

On my 70 R/T which is a 383, at some point someone converted it to electronic ignition with the orange box. I'm to the point where I need to order a new distributor cap. From what I've seen in member's restored cars, the original way the 70's came from the factory was with a tan distributor cap and obviously no electronic ignition. My car currently has an aftermarket Napa Auto parts black distributor cap.

I've got a list and getting ready to order from Classic Industries but my question is this: Is there an internal difference between a tan cap for a non-electronic ignition car or a black cap that would be for an electronic ignition, in other words can I order a tan standard cap for my electronic ignition car?

Thanks in advance!

I have a tan distributor cap on my car. It's a '70 that has electronic ignition too. It came with the distributor I bought. Unfortunately it was too long ago for my feeble mind to remember where I bought it. But, yes...You can get a tan distributor cap to suit your needs.

Mopar did not change the cap with electroic ign , the older point ign had a cast iron body with a different cap & they have added an Ozone vent on the newer caps but black or tan will interchange

It's a two prong resistor I'll assume?

If you have an Ohm meter, it should measure 1.2 Ohms for electronic.

As far as the distributor cap goes, I would be more concerned about the type of metal that is used inside to conduct the spark rather than the outside color of the plastic.  This is just my honest opinion.

Chryco Psycho summed it up for me by saying that the best conductors from best to worse:  copper, brass, aluminum.  That's is what you should be aiming for.

the original ballast had a steel band bent around it to mount it , they have nit been reproduced for a long time now
