440 stroker stealth heads cam choice
« on: June 26, 2012 - 12:54:09 AM »
Hey guys I am currently working on a 440 stroker using stealth heads that needs to run on pumped gas. I was curious who on here has done similar build and what cam did they choose. Neil is working on a cam for me now but I was curious what the rest of you guys have to say. I am looking lots of low end torque with a decent top end too. I havent chosen an intake yet but suggestions on that cant hurt either. If anyone has any suggestions or opinions the matter just chime in. Thanks!

Go with what Neil suggests.

He turned me onto a Lunati 60303 for my 440 block 512 stroker build.

I was looking for good low end torque with a smooth idle.

Lunati has a series of fast ramp solids that I use a lot , these are similar to street roller design without the cost of rollers . If you are willing to look at solid cams instead of Hyd .
I have often used the TF60 / TF 57 grind but it would be too aggressive to use with 3.23 gears as the RPM would be too high for 70 mph ,
 TF57 - 282 ad duration , 255 @ .050 , .582 lift with 1.5 rockers or .620 with 1.6
 TF60 - 278 ad duration , 251 @ .050 , .570 lift with 1.5 or .608 with 1.6
 TF61 - 274 ad duration , 247 @ .050 , .559 lift with 1.5 or .596 with 1.6
 TF62 - 270 ad duration , 243 @ .050 , .548 lift with 1.5 or .584 with 1.6
I would use a 112* CL with manifolds or a .110 CL with headers
I would use a stepped design with a larger lobe on the intake side so I would look at a 60/ 61 split or 61 / 62 . I would talk to Lunati Tech directly for help with the RPM band , I used the 57 / 60 in my 512 build with 3.73 gears & OD which puts me somewhere in  the 273 rear gear ratio !

Ok Neil I am going to call them today and see what I can work out. I will just tell them the combo I wi be running, by the way I read the message you sent me you sent me,  Do I need to try to increase the combustion chamber size or will the head gaskets you prescribed handle that?

So I called lunati, the guy prescribed the same cam as the one they gave TinCuda. I guess that on will work too. I wonder if hes had any complaints with it?

if possible you need to open the heads up 2-3 cc to get below 11:1

From what Angie at Mopar Engines West says, these heads have a notoriously bad bowl blend.  That may be a good reason to have them disassembled and worked on.

I think I mentioned in a different thread that mine received a bowl blend and all new hardware since many of the 440-source-assembled parts are known to fail.

What does the bowl blend do?

smooths the ridge behind the valve seat into the pocket = less turbulence in & out of the chamber

So on the advice of Lunati tech person, I got the lunat cam 60303. Heres the cam specs:
Lunati's Voodoo series of Hydraulic camshafts deliver more area under the curve than any other series of Hydraulic camshafts. This means more throttle response, quicker acceleration, more vacuum, better efficiency, combined with maximum horsepower and torque!
Hydraulic. The most awesome 268 cam ever produced! Out-powers all others! This High Performance street cam likes 2400 RPM stall, 800 cfm carb, dual plane intake and headers. Makes un-equaled power to 6200 RPM with proper valve springs. Very strong cam with great street manners.
Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 268/276
Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 226/234
Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .494/.513
LSA/ICL: 110/106
Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd
RPM Range: 1800-6200
Includes: Cam Only
Part Number: 60303

I got the kit with the lifters so I think I have almost evrything for my short block. The stroker kit came today, everything was accounted for so its all coming together for the most part.

I am very pleased with my 60303 Lunati cam.   I don't race my car but I can spin my tires until I let up off the gas!   275R60-15 rear tires.

I also get a nice smooth idle that sounds more stock and doesn't sound like it might die at any given lope.

I used Rhoads lifters to help smooth out the idle even more.

What kind of transmission gears and heads do you have? Have you had your motor dyno'd before?

727 auto transmission, 3:23 gears, stock 906 heads, 1 7/8 TTi headers into 3 inch pipes all the way back.

No dyno but seat of the pants-O-meter puts it into the 500 horse range.

Sorry that I forgot to mention earlier, I also have a six pack carburetor setup.

I read somewhere that it is rated at 1000 cfm.
