Best (currently) fitting quarter skins?
« on: June 27, 2012 - 11:40:39 AM »
I see lots of earlier discussion about sheet metal fit, I am just wonder what the latest info is on who makes the best fitting rear quater skins, yes skins  :),  for a 'Cuda   ...  I am looking at AMD, Goodmark, and Sherman.  I'm I to understand correctly that Goodmark is really just a supplier, and they don't actually make the parts?

Thanks!

Not sure who makes the best skins, but speaking from experience the cost savings up front for the skins is nothing compared to the extra work they require for installation.

For a 'Cuda, I think it'd be better to just use full quarters.  Butt-welding skins is a bit of work and requires very delicate welding to avoid warpage.

For a Challenger, it's a little easier as you got that hard body line right down the middle.

But if you must use skins, get AMD as they are the same as their full quarters but just cut down (weird that they cost less as it is more work for them to cut them down).

Goodmark and Sherman Share stampers and still make parts, Goodmark in some areas is only supplied by Keystone, Which is who bought goodmark a while back, AMD is AMD, but speculation is they still share stampings. With a skin IMO it comes down to your money, Its easier to put a Full quarter on but if you cant get past the price difference vs the labor of the skin. then you go with the skin. Either way more labor or more part for the dollar. AMD has a sharper body line then the other 2 and popularity will say AMD. I can sell you either one

Do the skins go into the wheel wells with a lip for the moldings, and wrap into the door frame?  How high up do the go, do they wrap over the top of the quarter??
The catalog photos are not very good.

i got my 70cuda skins at sherman parts at around 250$ each, they fit ok, just some persuasion needed here and there but overall, i'm happy with the result!

Thank you nr1freak, "looks" pretty good.  :) Those skins don't appear to wrap over the top of the quarter or into the door jambs, or is it an illusion?

Indeed great description, and went to visit this amazing place and it is everything you described. I own a new Memphis body shop and am thinking of offering such great services as you describe, you know you need to spend some money to make money.

Idid the skins on mine as I wanted to save the original and still in decent shape top. got them from sherms and fit was good but quality was fair.not hard to do,trimed about an inch under the top, flanged and welded in. MAKE SURE you do both skins and fit the valance at the same time as the repop val fits poor.
