Help me make up my mind on tires....
« on: June 28, 2012 - 03:39:18 PM »
Bulding a 1971 Hemi Cuda clone. I will be pretty much exactly stock appearing other then: New generation 472 Hemi, 4 Wheel Disc Brakes, PST suspension, TKO-600

I really keep going back to I want it to look stock and correct so I want the F60-15 Polyglass tires. At the same time a little better performance would be nice but reality it this is a dailly drive that will be pretty much a cruiser. Some one could make a fortune if they would make a performance tire with a stock apperaing side wall.

The whole tire would have to look stock.  The main thing I don't like about a modern 15" tire on an old car is the tread pattern.  The polyglass tires just look "right" on these cars.  It all depends on how your going to use the car once it's done.  Your mind is basically made up for you.  If you plan on throwing the car into a corner at 70mph then you'll want a better tire then a polyglass. :2cents:

Your choices in 15" are limited.  I have a strong preference visually for 15" wheels with a tall sidewall and RWL.  The Goodyear Polyglas GT can't be beat for looks, but if you want to drive the car then a radial tire will perform so much better.  The main choices are Mickey Thompson, Cooper Cobra and BFG.  (The Goodyear Eagle GT II are no longer available)  The BFG are the least sticky, but have the advantage of being period correct.  Purely subjective, but I prefer the looks of the BFG's RWL over the MT and Cooper RWL.  If you are showing blackwalls or don't have any preference between the various RWL, then I would go with the stickier MTs.

Would anyone have a picture of the Mickey Thompson Sportsman S/T's on a car? Guess that would be my choice if I go for radials.

Just a consideration since you are getting 4 wheel disc brakes, I don't know if you are stepping up the rotor size, if so, becareful as some 15" rims my not fit over big brakes.  :2cents:
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

Check out Diamond Back tires, http://www.dbtires.com/ and look at their redline, blue line, or gold line radials. They do not have the square blocked off shoulder of a bias ply, but the redline walls do appear more correct for the muscle car era.

Thanks for the link. Don't think the red lines really fit the look of the Cuda. We run them on out black GTO's with red pin stripe though, look really good on them.
