Proud of my lil 340!!!
« on: June 29, 2012 - 12:59:21 AM »
Cruised the 73 down to the drag strip tonight for test and tune nights (anything can run, a lawn mower if ya wanted!).  Wasn't planning on racing, just gonna cruise the car, but when I got there, I couldn't resist.   :burnout: Just a 1/8 mile, and no joke 75 percent of what ran were Mustangs (mostly street cars, a handful of drag cars only).  Fox body, and the late 90's early 00's versions mostly.  The next biggest block was diesel trucks....we like em down here, for work and play  :rebel: Some of those modded Duramax's run low 9's, then go to the Sonic for a burger, and wake up and haul hay the next day!...one fast powerjoke down there, not many cummins that could compete with the DMax's on the strip though.  Anyway, my buddy in his old 12 valve cummins wanted to race, so I said what the heck.  Let him watch me do a practice run to see how good it sounded.  340, bored .60 over, auto, bigger cam, hooker headers, peg leg rear end, nothing too wild, just a cruiser.  First practice run, got a 10 flat.  Lined up with him next time, and left him in the dust!! Ran in the high 9's, both time I raced him!! Around 74 mph. Might not sound like much but I was proud of her...not saying much beating an old 12 valve (by about 3 seconds each time), but I thought it was VERY good for just a few mods to a 340, and in a heavy challenger.  Certainly not as much mods as some of those mustangs had which for the most part ran in the 9's, a few 8's.  It could've beat some of the stangs, would've lost to some, but I thought hey, for its first runs on the strip, no wild mods I was pleased and it sounded DANG good!  Plus, it turned more heads than any other car, even wayyyy faster ones.  Even my passenger I had when making the runs said "dude everyone is watching you go down the strip"....The 340 lives, got her first kill under her belt, and I for one was proud of the old gal  :wow: Even  better, after I drove it to Sonic for a burger, got plenty of compliments, and drove her home....add to that the fact that it wasn't another mustang, and it made for a great evening.  Still grasping the fact that a "driver" quality Challenger gets more head turns, wows, and compliments then all of these modern, sometimes faster, shinier and more modded out cars and trucks.  :bigshades:

P.S. Even though I'm a dodge man, and my dad owns a cummins, the drag strip leaves me drooling for a duramax every week I go (as far as speed goes...hauling, work, pulling is another story ) Still though

:clapping:  great feeling ain't it!  I'm going to a local cruise this saturday and sometimes you feel like a celebrity.  People run out in the street to take a picture or a video of your car as you pass by.  Thumbs up   flying everywhere and shouts of "Lite Em Up" coming from the crowd.

You are now an official mopar crackhead....enjoy!

Yeah, if you need an ego boost just take the old girl out for a drive.  The rarity and good looks just seem to turn heads and bring out the thumbs up.

So what are these guys doing with the duramax engines? I assume a chip would be the most cost effective but I am nervous about messing with my work truck. I have an 04 one ton GMC that would be alot more fun to drive if it could do 8's. :burnout:

Chips are just the beginning on most of them. The fastest Dmaxs have an EFI Live tune (its bad to the bone. Wouldn't fool with any other tune for Duramaxs) which gives massive power increases and some have that along with an Edge or another brand chip. Bigger Turbos, fuel pump turned up, built Transmission parts (usually from Suncoast), bigger exhaust or stack. Intake of course. Of course there are differences, some do more than that, some less, but there was a Dmax last night that had an extended cab and a flat bed that was running around 9 secs. It was built and rolled some coal.

Oh and one Dmax with 4 doors, probably weighs around 7k pounds has the things I mentioned (EFI Live with another chip, tranny), maybe a little more and runs mid 8's

Good job at the track!  The one time I took mine people kept asking me "You're really gonna race THIS?"  The majority of people only see our cars in museums or cruise nights these days.  Hell, maybe only on TV at Barret Jackson :roflsmiley:  they're too valuable to drive every day.  So when I take mine out I enjoy all the complements and pointing and realizing that I'm giving people something to smile about and tell their friends later.  Or here in liberal MA something to tsk tsk about as I pass their prius  :burnout:

And I've had first hand experience with diesels.  I took my SRT-4 to the track a few times.  When my little turbo 4 cylinder got beat bad by a beat up work truck with ladder racks I decided to sell it!
Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?
