Exhaust fumes inside car
« on: July 03, 2012 - 03:44:29 AM »
I'd noticed the occasional whiff of exhaust fumes, but last weekend it got severe. so much so, after driving for 20 minutes, I had to pull over and get out of the car. Then decided to drive it straight home.

I've read that chances are that it's a worn trunk seal, and possibly rust holes in the trunk floor. I've had replacement trunk panels for awhile, so that's already booked in to get done.

What I want to know is what else could it be?

I noticed today when I dropped it off at the body-shop that, as soon as I got out, the smell had engulfed the entire car outside and stuck around for a few good seconds. Very noticeable and very hard to determine where it's coming from.

What else should I be looking at?

where is your tail pipe or pipes located?  Rear bumper or under the seat area?
Do your headers or exhaust pipes or "Y" pipe have leak proof connections; tight clamps?
The mufflers could have pin holes on the upper half that is right under the floor.

Rear pipes, out back of car.

Will go over the exhaust and see what I can find.

I've seen this talked about alot and have the same problem. I have heard that it can be the tail light gaskets. I bought some but have not put them in yet.;

I once gave myself a terrible case of exhaust fume poisoning driving from VA to FL. There was an exhaust leak in the head pipe that I didn't know about.

Not sure of the exact cause. Had a few rust holes in the trunk floor, which is being replaced right now. New trunk seal on the way. Hopefully that sorts it.
