Radio Wire Harness
« on: July 05, 2012 - 12:28:22 PM »
I have a thumb wheel FM radio and am going make my one speaker dash a three speaker, I also have a new dash wireharness.

All I have it the radio and no other wiring to go with it, I see the hook up on the new dash harness that powers the radio, but I have nothing to the speakers. Does anyone make a repo harness that goes to the front and back speakers? (I have the rear wire harness, maybe the back speakers are in that one?) Also in diagrams I look at I see things like a crossover and fader control. Trying to get a handle on everything that I have to have to make this radio work in my 1971 Cuda.

As far as I know, no one makes the harnesses.  The following were available:

1 Speaker (1 front, 0 Rear) used for AM (aka Mono)
2 Speaker (1 Front, 1 Rear) used for AM (aka Mono)
3 Speaker (3 Front) used for FM (aka Stereo)
5 Speaker (3 front, 2 rear) used for FM (aka Stereo)

Each set up uses a different set of harnesses.  The fader (a knob mounted on the dash) is also different for the mono and stereo set ups.
Here are some pictures from a 5 speaker set up:

Circled in red is the harness that goes under the dash:

Circled in red is the crossover box, in blue is the rear speaker harness (note this is different than the harness that runs to the rear lights, gas gauge, dome light, etc it runs in the same channel but is a separate harness)

Just in case you encounter any others:

This is the stereo 3 speaker harness.  You can tell the difference from the 5 speaker harness because it has only a single 6 wire connector:

And then there is the two speaker mono harness and rear harness.  Note that the fader is wired directly into this harness instead of having a connector like the 5 speaker has.  Also the fader has only a single pot as opposed to the double pot of the stereo design.  Note that the rear harness only has 2 wires in this case, the 5 speaker has 4 wires (2 pairs).
