AAR spoiler mounting,...DONE!
« on: July 08, 2012 - 06:38:28 AM »
Does anyone have their AAR spoiler mounted with 3M tape instead of the bolts?

I have a base model decklid and will have to cut the square holes and drilll holes.....wondering if the tape would work....

They use it for all sorts of trim nowadays....and its not as permanant as drilling holes in the event I want to go back.. :clueless:

The 3M tape sounds like a great idea if you don't want to drill holes but I'm not familiar with the underside of the spoiler and would wonder how well the tape would be able to grab if there isn't enough surface area to adhere to.

My friend had an Acura TL with a taped on spoiler and it was fine BUT the spoiler was only like 3/4" tall.  The AAR spoiler is much taller so there will be more pressure on it at highway speeds.

Cutting out the holes and drilling for the bolts doesn't take very long. An hour with a drill. Course, I didn't make mine square, just a bit larger than the socket needed for the nut.  :2cents:

Well, my deck lid is already painted, for one....hate to have the raw edges etc.....

Plus, I like the idea of being able to remove the spoiler if I should decide to later with no holes left behind....

Pretty sure it would work....just hoping to find someone who has done it to confirm.....

not sure if i would try it , but if are going to try it, at least put in the (4) small screws at the ends..i'm not sure tape would hold it.

It's a good idea if the car won't see much rain. Water can cause 3M tape to fail if there isn't a bead of RTV around it. Another thought is some heavy duty Velcro that they sell at Home Depot. But again, I can imagine water might cause that to fail too.

I have been scouring the web for info on the tape etc.

I have used it a lot in the past on stuff and it holds up great...no issues with water etc that I have seen....

But never tried it on a large piece like this.

I emailed 3M for their feedback as well....but it seems that the main issue is that the spoiler has a raised edge all the way around ....the 3M tape is not think enough to be placed on the flat areas and overcome that raised edge......so I would have to double or triple it up.....I have done this for chrome stick on stiff on my bike, but again, not sure it would work for the spoiler.

I really hate to put holes into my (painted) deck lid......but just may have to.

I placed the spoiler on the car just to see what it looks like and it looks cool!

Went out and bought some poster board so I can make a template for the bolt holes.....very nervous about that...LOL

It won't be removable easily but how about panel bonding adhesive?
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I thought of that....or even silicone goo.....but what will that do to the paint below it?

Here is something else I was wondering.....actually two things....on the hardware, there is a wavy, friction fit washer for each one, to secure the bracket to the spoiler.  Well, wont that dig into the paint and cause rust when water gets under the spoiler?   And that leads to the second question......if I drill the holes, I guess the only way to seal from water getting in through them would be to use silicone goo?

From one of us that has installed a go-wing spoiler, I can tell you yes, you need to put silicone goo(RTV) around the holes.    :grinyes:

Installed my spoiler today!!!

Made a template of the base of the spoiler....

Those holes were tough to drill....not hard, but on th edge of my seat (so to speak)

Well, too late to turn back now!!

Next I used a metal hole saw with a long pilot bit.....THESE holes had me nervous! But turned out good.

Keeping these for sentimental reasons....LOL

All done!  Used silicone around the holes. I didnt install the screws /clips at the ends.....seems like they woukdnt do a lot.....Ran into a guy at Carlisle (the fish with the wild skeleton fish mural on the sides) and he installed the same way and says its fine....so gonna try it for a while. Seems like they would be more hassle than functional. Hoping I used enough silicon.....but other than that, pretty happy with the final results!

The first hole was the worst.......got easier after that...LOL

I put off doing the spoiler for a long time because of that fear/angst...finally decided "what the hell"...LOL

Next is to cut a hole in the hood for a scoop of some sort.....but for that I got a whole new used hood!  LOL

Spoiler looks great. If you feel like making it look factory in the future First Place Auto sells templates. I think I paid 30 bucks for the AAR spoiler ones. Sorry I didn't mention this sooner but it originally sounded like you weren't interested in any cutting.

Thanks for the compliment and the info....

Actually, I knew there were templates 'out there"...at Carlisle I stopped at one vendor who was selling the "licensed" spoilers.....the price for the spoiler was $275.....plus he wanted another $20 I think for the templates they had......plus another $100 if i wanted it with the black original paint.....lots of $$$ for a spoiler , I thought.  I decided to hold off since I knew i saw the spoilers at less $$$ elsewhere.....Found the spoiler at Dale's Cuda Shop and got a great CC.com price of $150!  Its not "licensed".....but honestly, the ones from Dale's look exactly like the others to me, and the plus is that they pre-paint in black primer....which, for my non-original install, worked just fine.

Once I got the spoiler I really wanted to try using the 3M tape but found I couldnt find any the thickness that was needed....so I bit the bullet and drilled the holes.

The round holes are fine for me.......seems like the square cutouts would be tough to perfectly reproduce even with templates, especially since my lid is already painted.......and like I said, my ride isnt "original", so its fine .   Anyone who looks under my trunk lid and doesnt like it can...well......you know....LOL  :)
