Insuring a Dutch Challenger in the US; any leads?
« on: July 14, 2012 - 08:37:37 AM »
Cry for help; is there anybody out there who knows an insurance company that is willing to insure a Dutch Challenger while driving in the USA this fall?

Seems like an impossible quest...  :(

:netherlands: :working:  ==>  :wavingflag:, is that really an impossible dream that I have??

I assume your insurance at home won't cover it?
I would think you will need an appraisal on the car first off?
I guess one of the obstacles is an insurance company has no way of verifying your driving record?

Interesting dilema.

I have my doubts that you would get an american car insurance company to insure a dutch-registered car being driven by a dutch driver.

Another question: Is it even legal to drive that car over here? Or are you just trying to trailer it to a show?

You may have to think outside the box a bit... I wonder if it's possible to get it insured as an object and not necessarily a car. For instance, Lloyds of London will insure body parts, etc. for athletes. Ie, you can get anything insured.

Depending on how long you are going to be here you may be able to register it in an individual state in order to obtain insurance.  For example in MA, you can drive here for up to one year on a valid foreign license.  If you become a resident of MA you are able (actually required) to register your car in MA at your new address and then obtain minimum liability insurance.  Once that is set, you can drive your car anywhere in the 50 states and Canada under reciprocity agreements.  As far as becoming a resident goes, you just need an address that you're staying at during the time your visa is valid.  It's kind of an end run around the system, but legal here.  I don't know how the specific laws work in the state you intend on visiting, but they may be similar.

That will get you at least liability insurance in order to drive.  If you want collector car insurance (full value of vehicle) you may have to call Hagerty, Grundy or one of the other specialty insurance providers to see if they can help you out.  I don't know offhand if there is a legal way to drive on a Dutch registration in the US.  The only time I've seen foreign plates here is on US service members who had their cars imported from their foreign bases, and they're covered under USAA military insurance, or foreign diplomats.

Enjoy your trip!
Yes I own a 1972 Dodge Challenger Convertible T/A S/E with a 440 Six Pak. Can it get any more wrong?

Thanks to CC member DrewCraner (who will join a part of the cross country trip) I'm already able to get a liability insurance (via Farmer's Insurance).
But that's not sufficient for me. Theft and damage done by others have to be covered at least.
I can drive with my foreign plates for one year in the US (my planned trip will take a month), so that's not the issue.
Already called Hagerty, but that was a no go.

I have talked to 7 different insurance as well as AAA, companies and it seems the laws have changed state to state and they have changed they way they cover people/property.

If Roland can get a Dutch ins.company to insure his car, then he can get liability coverage here so he will have to have double coverage from 2 ins. companies.

I asked if for instance if I could get coverage to take my car to Mexico, they said no as soon as you cross the border you will have to sign a waiver ,

However if I went to Canada they would have a policy that would allow me to use American insurance in Canada.

We need a company that might offer a Coop of coverage

They have companies here in San Diego that will insure vehicles for trips down to Mexico.  I wonder if any of them will insure you?

And if you are down this way let me know and I'll cruse my Challenger with you.  There are lots of great places to drive around here.

Also, if you can lets see some video! :)

Its rather simple for anyone to get insurance on them self's for what they rent and drive over here but I think the  sticking point is the cars age ,and value, and it is coming from a foreign country  , and the insurance companies are staying away from that.

All of them will insure Roland but none of them will insure his car :villagers:

If you have a big wallet, just buy another Challenger equipped the same as yours, Drive  the  wheels off of it then re sell.

Heck even if you sell it at a loss you might be farther ahead then bringing your car over.....
