....ok, not THAT kind of studs.....I am a happily married man.
Needing help on wheel studs.
I am replacing the studs that came with the axles that came with my "new to me" 8 3/4" housing.
Pulled the rght rear wheel from the car today and measured.....seems that I currently have studs that are about 1 9/16" overall, 9/16" is shoulder and the 1" is thread, measured per the Dorman chart here:
(page 6)
https://www.dormanproducts.com/catalog/hardware2006/137-142_Sec10_Part2.pdfThe lug nutz I am currently using have 1/2-20 stamped on them.
I want to go a little longer as my rims have thick mounting flanges. I figure an extra 1/4" length will do.
Ok ,so easy, right? went to the link here (page 10):
https://www.dormanproducts.com/catalog/hardware2006/149-154_Sec10_Part4.pdf#610-174 appears to be the closest fit to what I think I need..... 9/16" shoulder, 1 3/4" long (a little shy of the extra 1/4" I wanted by a 16th)....and 1/2-20. But the question comes in around the "knurl diameter". I used a digital caliper and cant figure out if I shoudl be measuring the actual knurled part or the unknurled section below the knurls, seeing as the stud gets pressed into the axle flange.....and in theory the knurls would squish a little (right?). If I measure at the knurls on my old ones, I get .671 and the chart shows .668.....Is that "close enough"?
Also, teh other question of the day is what are the tricks for pressing the new ones in? I have a hydraulic press but I cant fenagle the axle to sit right to press them in....so I was thinking of drawing them in with the lug nuts but I read elsewhere that that stresses the lug bolts....
Need some guidance from those who know studs....LOL
Thanks in advance guys!
