Need tips - Cutting hole in hood for Hood Scoop
« on: July 16, 2012 - 06:22:17 AM »
I'm going to cut a hole in my original flat hood in order to get some cool air into my engine.
What is a good way to cut the hole?
Do you guys have a nice looking Scoop that would fit this hood?
Any pictures of Hood Scoops?
Thanks!

I take it that you don't want the stock RT/Rallye hood?

My advice--------- don't do it.  I have yet to see a non stock hood (scoop) that I liked.  While not original on your car, the Rallye Hood looks the best IMO.  Why mess with perfection?

I am doing the same thing....bought a used flat hood at Carlisle. So will be watching your posts here....

I dont want the twin bulge hood for a couple reasons.....a) everyone has them and b) they are not functional.    They look cool enough, though.

Shakers are functional but very pricey and they are a pain for when you want to tweak the carb.....so I have been told.

I am considering anything bolt-on......from the old 60s hemi style to the new Challenger's twin snorkle (which looks like the old days challenger scoop).....Just have to figure out what I like, and what will work the best as far as looks and some function.

I love the look of the R/T hood on my car, it looks GREAT!
BUT, I want to get some cooler air into that carb. I've gone to a Holley Blue Gas Pump to make sure I'm getting plenty of fuel. I went to a complete MSD ignition system to make sure I have no ignition issues. I run a Quick Fuel 750 carb. But the car still has an intermittent problem, it lays down at high RPM. I have also move some gas lines that were close to headers or exhaust pipes.
I think it may be vapor locking at these crazy high temperatures we have not been enjoying in northern Indiana.
I think I will remove the hood and try driving it on a hot day to see if that helps. If it does, I want to go to a hood situation that gets cool air into my carb.....

You may find that the engine will run hotter with the hood removed.  The hood helps dirrect air through the radiator.  The flow might be interupted with the hood off.

Do you have the exhaust crossover in the intake blocked off?  With today's fuel, I think this might become manditory for older cars.  There's just too much heat with the crossovers functional.

I have seen R/T hoods that have the aluminum plates in the scoops removed and ducting routed into the air cleaner.  I'd look into this option before cutting the hood.

Thanks Brad. I knew there was a reason I liked you.

Actually, the previous owner hacked a hole in my flat hood and installed a fiberglass six-pack hood scoop that looks similar to the Challenger T/A hood scoop.

I can't believe I don't have a better picture than this on my computer.   :pullinghair:

If your having that problem of vapor locking?pulling the hood will not help.Should get to the bottom of that first.
You said that you installed an electric pump, whats your fuel tank?stock tank?stock sending unit?Is the electric pump lower than the tank sending unit?I just went through this with my 69 cuda and might be able to help out.

I do not know if the Chally twin bulge set up is like my Cuda but the PO had cut the fake vent portion out of the inserts and drilled 3 holes with a holesaw in each blank plate in the hood. I did not like the look so I cut out the remainder of the hood but left a little lip on bottom to stop some of the water if I get caught in rain. I then made grilles for the inserts from perforated aluminum to match the lower grille I made. I plan to go the shaker route. Pain to remove or not, always been my vision. Second to the Shaker I like the TA hood best.

Nice job on cutting out the hood scoops, cuda346pk!

I don't know about the cooling and such, but an idea for another option is I got a hood that was cut for a tunnel ram or something, was a Rallye hood too.  Will be using a Mr. Gasket Street Scoop poking through the hole.

Looks like the scoop on this Charger...

I always liked that look......but wonder if the extra cool air effect is offset by the fact that the aircleaner has to be waaaaaay smaller to fit in that scoop......?

Plus, I am not sure that that is "appropriate" for my car since its a small block.....when you see something like that, its usually attached to a big honking motor....LOL

Thats the look I like too......the T/A scoop is at the top of my list, this is second, and I think the Mr Gasket deal is a close third.....the mr gasket deal is the most direct route to get "ram air" I suppose.....the T/A scoop, to me, looks great and is less likely to be a water/rain issue and looks real cool.....

The stock twin bulge scoops are cool looking, but I read somewhere that because they are so low, they reside in what is call the "boundary layer" of air....and almost no air will flow thru those scoops into the bay......have to get up higher above the surface if the hood.....in that regard,  the mr gasket deal would be the best, the T/A scoop the second best and the 6 pack third......

I think if I can find a good looking T/A style scoop that bolts on I will go that route....then find a way to try and raise the air cleaner I am using into the scoop for more of a ram air effect......then make a blockoff plate or something for the times when driving in the rain is necessary......

So many decisions....LOL

You won't need any block off plate if its raining,I drove this home from a show on Sunday in the rain and it ran perfect. Now if the spool and the drag radials were as forgiving it would have been fun.

:iagree:

An AAR hood will let plenty of air in.
