Need tips - Cutting hole in hood for Hood Scoop

An AAR hood will let plenty of air in.

Also it may look a little "different" as it's on a Challenger, although I do like the AAR hood.  I think HP2 has an AAR hood on his Challenger, look cool, IMO.

I always liked that look......but wonder if the extra cool air effect is offset by the fact that the aircleaner has to be waaaaaay smaller to fit in that scoop......?

Plus, I am not sure that that is "appropriate" for my car since its a small block.....when you see something like that, its usually attached to a big honking motor....LOL

Eh, I only have a little 340.  I like the look, won't be racing anyone. 

Yeah, the air cleaner is smaller than a typical 12" deal but figure you get cool air, a ram air effect once the car starts to roll (not so much off idle) and it looks cooooool if you like that look.   

I wouldn't slice up my hood to do it but I got a hood for free  locally from a member so I got the Mr. Gasket scoop just for a Jeckyl and Hyde look.  I don't think it would look right with stock rims like the Magnum 500s, Ralleys might be ok, but I got some slotted rims to fit the old school look.

Honestly, I don't think any of the stock scoops designs are going to bring in a lot of fresh air. The TA scoop probably does a better job than any of the others, but even that I think is minimal (I know I'm getting one, but I just like the look  )

If you really want air...what about going the old school Ford route and pull 2 of the head lights for a Ram Air system a-la the Ford Thunderbolt:

Along the lines of what Jaimez mentioned you could use a Ram Air box.

If you put 90 degree elbows fitted with foam insulation up to the openings of your rallye hood, you won't get Ram Air due to how low the hood scoops are but at least you'll get fresh cooler air.

Imagine the way the old Ram Air Buick GS cars were set up.

My cure in the late 70's was to cut a hole in the hood and let the carb(s) sit above of the hood.   

Picture is when I ran a single carb for street use and duals at the drags.

   Cool.  I still have memories of one time when I was sitting in class at school...I was in 10th grade I think......a big rainstorm hit and we watched as one of the senior boys ran outside to cover the same type of intakes on his 67 Mustang.....LOL

They look really cool though.

My Jury Rigged /Hill Billy Engineered set up allows me to use the Air Filter set up that I already have. Mine is pretty crude, but I think it will achieve what I want. I should be getting 90% (or more) of the air going into my carburetor from outside the engine compartment. Cool air to the carb! Prior to this rig, I was getting all of my air from the engine compartment....TOO HOT!!!
  Between this and my new 1'' Phenolic spacer, my little Quick Fuel Carburetor should stay a bunch cooler

The little plastic drive rivets fit the factory holes. They were too short in many places.


I'm going to put another piece of plastic in the area just in front of this, there's a void there that would allow hot air from the engine bay to get sucked into the cool air area. That void is just above the radiator fan.


I cut the inside hole too big, so that really looks stinky.


I'm waiting for my shipment from Jegs, they have a foam that I will install on top to get a good seal between my lower air cleaner plate and the plastic I attached to the hood.
