Windshield trim removal and installation
« on: July 20, 2012 - 09:58:10 PM »
Hello all, I am brand new to the classic car restoration thing. I have a 73 dodge challenger and I recently had the vinyl top taken off. I sanded and reprinted the roof black for now, eventually I will paint the car but there is a lot of work to be done prior. I want to replace the windshield and the window trim. I can't seem to find any info on how to take out the front windshield and the process involved in re-installing it properly. Then I can't find any info on how to install the window trim either. If any of you know where I can get the step by step process from that would be awesome. Thanks in advance

For the trim removal you need a removal tool that you can get from the parts store. It's cheap 10$ or so it is basically a handle with flat sheet metal and has a hook on the end. Poor discription but google it and you can find a image. Basically you put it under the trim find the retaining clip by feel and pull gently and you can see the trim sort of releases. Work your way around the window and it comes off. For the window you need another tool that has a curve on the end and that will cut the glue out of the window. Mine has a handle on the blade and another handle with a cable to pull it around the window. Keep it flat if you pull it crooked it will break the glass

Here is a picture of the tool, most are similar looking to this, you can get them at most auto parts stores.

This subject has been popular lately..... :dunno:  Must be a lot of cracked windows out there.

Thanks that helps some. I definitely think the body shop thy took the vinyl roof off didn't do a great job with the windshield. It looks like sealant all around the windshield and are there supposed to be a mix of a rubber gasket and sealer? Or is it mostly just sealer? An where do the clips go around the windshield for the moulding and how do they go in, before gasket, after? I appreciate your help thank you

On my 73, I had the windshield replaced, as mine was cracked, and my back glass reinstalled.  I called an auto glass place and they came to my house and did it on the car, pretty cheap too...if you could find that, I would recommend it- cause it might not be much more than buying a new glass and putting it in yourself.  As far as the moulding clips go, there should be little round screw head looking things around the windshield that the clips slide on to.  When they did the windows on my challenger there was no rubber gasket, front or back.  Just a sealer.  Looked like something you would use on a roof...just glues in there.  After that, I put some new clips on those little round studs.  Make sure all the studs are there, cause if they're not, you will want to fix that before you put a new windshield in.  If they are, put your windshield in, then put your clips on, and then the molding.  At least, thats how I did mine.  Works fine  :2cents:
