727 upshift question
« on: July 22, 2012 - 03:00:36 PM »
ok guys, 70 cuda 360 w/ freshly built 727. 2400 stall. my question is that when getting on the throttle a bit I shift manually from 1st to 2nd it has a delay , not a slip . If i leave it in drive it shifts perfect ( firm but not tire chirping) which is what I asked of the trans shop. I have the factory shifter on the floor. Any thoughts?

Does your tranny have a shift kit?

No shift kit, but they said they upgraded the clutch pack to a 5 from a 4 or something like that. I told them I did not want a snappy trans that get old after a while. I am baffled as to why it feels crappy only during manual shifts

It sounds like 1-2 shift bind up from the rear servo not being shimmed solid. Look at reply #5 on this thread  http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=20391.0

O.K. , awesome thread on 727 know-how Terry! I am back to the trans shop that bench built mine. Along with the crappy manual upshift(which I pointed out the solid servo tip) I am now getting a 2-3 shift flair under acceleration. They think it is my lokar kick down cable not having enough throw for the trans lever. So I picked the car back up, put it back on my lift and me and my mechanic agree that the carb end of the cable moves the same as the trans end. full throttle=full lever throw.??????  Also I seem to get a weird neutral out if i am at light steady throttle in 3rd ( steady cruising at 50 mph ) As soon as I apply small amount of throttle it lumps back in gear and pulls fine as long as car is accelerating. I feel something is fubar inside trans.

sounds like to much clearance in the forward clutch drum. the only way to verify that (that i know of) is to take the trans apart and break the feeler gauge out.

Your 2-3 flair is more than likely the cable set up not right yet. If it isn't the cable, then the 3rd gear clutch pack is probably burnt from the cable not being set right in the beginning. Set the cable alot tighter and see if the flair is gone.
