Best ground????
« on: July 22, 2012 - 08:32:51 PM »
Alright I just can't leave well enough alone. In the middle of installing my electric fuel pump with return I decided to move the battery in the trunk. Question - I am planning on running the 2ga ground all the way to the front and attach it to the engine block as it is now. Is this a good idea or is there a better location. I also plan on grounding the block to the cowl as well as the rad support.  :clueless:

00 cable would be better. You could piggyback with 12 or 14 gauge anywhere else you like from the block
The more grounds you have, the better off you'll be. The larger the cable you use, the smaller
amount of resistance you'll have.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I also have not ran the positive yet to the starter as the cable with the kit was not long enough to run neatly the way I like it. Would you als run 00 here as well?

I use welding cable , you can get at Princess Auto or other places , yes too heavy is far better than too light . I run  the ground back up to the trans mount .

:iagree: Yes 00 cable. Welding cable is perfect when you can get it. It has finer strands and a larger concentration of
strands. This also means less resistance and/or voltage drop. Voltage drop is the biggest
problem with putting the battery in the trunk. The longer the run from the battery, the more voltage you will lose.
To combat the problem, you use the heaviest cable you can find and/or afford.

Welding cable it is then - I may run the ground to the trans mount but its not a whole lot more cable to run to the block. Suppose I could still ground the @$% out of the block to the cowl / rad support anyways.

:iagree: with cudaman. One pitfall though is finding a lug to fit your starter stud and the large wire. I found it difficult to find locally. Also getting your hands on a crimper for the connections is difficult unless you have a friend in an industrial electrician job. 00 is not a common size to play with.  :2cents:

just use a butane torch and some solder fill the lug with hot solder and dunk the cable in it

Many auto parts stores have a manual crimper. It is actually a hammer driven swedge. Works nicely.
Then we fill it with solder.
