Torsion Bar Boots
« on: July 26, 2012 - 04:58:46 PM »
Hey Guys,

I have to remove the torsion bars to take out the K-member.  Do the boots usually get messed up?  Should I buy new ones?  Thanks

Dave

Is the rubber dried out? Still pliable? I reused mine with no problems?

Yes the T bars have to be removed to get the K frame out , T bar boots generally can be saved as long as you are gentle with them .

 :iagree:

I've reused a couple sets now. As long as they aren't trashed before you pull them out, they should be ok.

Why are you pulling the K?  Are you tearing into the car for a complete restoration or are you just doing some front end work?  If you aren't tearing the whole car down, you don't even have to take the torsion bars all the way out.  Just let them rest in the x-member socket.  That way you don't have to take the boots off at all.

The K member is coming out so I can paint it.  I've also fabricated a jig so I can assemble the engine, trans and accessories out of the car and then install everything.  Thanks

:thinkerg:  While you have it out , get your welder out and weld all the seams up and gusset the steering box mount!

Great idea I think I will do that.  I've been building Chevys for 35 years.  This is my first Mopar (71 Challenger Convertible) so I am loving all of the little tricks from you guys.  Thanks

Anything else let me know I would love to hear them.
