    Best Panel Adhesive?

    I am doing the trunk floor, dropoffs and lower partial 1/4s.
    I want to use adhesives......any suggestions as to which is the best
    Money is an issue as well, I'd like to keep it as inexpensive as possible.

    3M is good, I have heard.
    I have also been told that for inside, unseen places Liquid Nails is fine!!!????

    I have tO do this same repair. Why the adhesive? I have heard it is good but what are the advantages? No rust on the back side from welding? I am only asking because I don't know. Good luck. If you can take some pics of it when your doing it.

    Adhesives have their place but I have always heard not to use it anywhere structural. And definitely don't go
    cheap on it. Your whole job depends on it working properly.   :2cents:

    How are you going to attach the tank braces to the trunk floor.The quarter panel to  the drop off is not easy to mate up.there will be some stress on that area.I would weld everything.

    Most shops today use either 3M or Lord Fusor with the nod to 3M. While I wouldn't recommend doing structural (rails) with bonding agent; properly applied, as in follow the instructions closely, they have their place. It's common these days to bond on 1/4 panels, however most shops also put welds in at crucial junctures and so would I. I'd weld the 1/4-lock pillar joint and at the corners of the C pillar and rear body panel/quarter junction and a few around the ends of the wheel house. Fit your door and rear valance and drill pilot holes before you begin any of it. In this heat, you've got 30-45 minutes worktime so be ready before you mix it. Good luck  :2cents:

    I want to use adhesive for several reasons. 

    My welding sucks  :pullinghair: and I don't want to take a chance of warping the metal with heat or burning through and having to deal with that.....mostly the warp factor though - I don't want to warp straight metal.

    Adhesives, if I understand correctly, are very good at preventing rust if applied correctly.  The areas that I am working on are convoluted and have lots of little nooks and crannies that would be rust pockets if I welded it together.  Hopefully the glue will fasten and seal these areas.  Also, glue gives me a bit of time to tweak the fit as I go, before the glue sets up.

    Some places are very difficult to weld.  I can hardly see them as it is, much less lying on my back with a welding helmet on!  Glue and clamps seem the way to go.

    The only part of the 1/4 I am replacing is the metal from about 2" below the crease along the side down and just behind the wheel well.  The body on this car is arrow straight and I don't want to mess around with the lines, I'm not very talented.

    The trunk will be a patch job as well.  I am undecided as to welding or using adhesive.....I will plug weld the tank braces and exhaust hanger brackets to the floor. 

    The dropoffs are where I will use adhesives as well.  There are a lot of places that can be glued that would be really difficult (for me) to weld.
    I have spent a lot of time between beers tweaking and massaging this area.  I think it is pretty well aligned now, with very little pulling or stress on the seams, so I think glue will work.  This did take a lot of fiddling around though.

    I have been able to test fit the partial 1/4s and dropoffs and using screws get them place and aligned to where it seems everything will fit properly.   I have only worked on one side so far, and not touched the other.  I think that I will screw everything together, align it all with the bumper and rear valence, and glue it up BEFORE doing the other side.  It seems that this is the best way to ensure proper fit.

     :violin:  Please understand, I have very limited funds, I'm getting pretty old, with very bad knees, a bum back, little skill, bad eyesight, short temper and a burning desire to get this car back on the road before they bury me.  It is not a show car by any means.  It is just my cat that I bought in 1970 and I have not driven it in almost 20 years.  It deserves to get out again.

    3m is the best,I would not use any other brand IMO. lap join the panels and use a flange tool on your joints.after the bond set really well,a few days,dig out excess bonder with a black cookie wheel and cover with long n strong or some other filler with choped glass.the bonder will heat up and swell the paint from the sun.I've done a quater and have no swell lines.dont weld near the bond as heat will destroy the bond.shops weld panels in tear away zones so the panel will tear away in an accident where specified. the bond is much stronger then a weld and wont tear off when hit.

    Any of the 3M, Fusor,SEM  adhesives will have just about same results, I use them on regular basis ,keep in mind that dispensing gun can be expensive. BTW, bonded area is way stronger than spot welded and absolutely no chance of rust.
