Workshop design help wanted.
« on: February 18, 2005 - 07:24:23 PM »
Actually, just want a couple opinions.

I am in desperate need of a place to work on my projects.  I found a really good deal on metal buildings that will make a good workshop.  The best deal is on either an 18 X 21 or if I pony up a few more pesos, a 20 X 21.  Not huge, but adequate for a place to turn wrenches.  I am going to buy 2 of them and here's my problem,  should I put them together front to back and end up with one building say 20 X 42,  enough room to store 2 cars side by side in the back and room to work on one car in the front.  Or,  build 2 seperate buildings, one for storage and one for working ?  Either option will cost roughly the same, I'm interested in which you think will be more useful.

Thanks,

P.G.

I think I'd go keeping them seperate, guess it depends on the kinda work your gonna do, but the mess created by strippin parts, grinding & body work gets into everything, it's really nasty, wouldn't want my finished car in the same area.  Rich.

another thing to think about is heating and cooling. Its cheaper to heat or cool one large building than 2 small ones

I think right next to each other would be best too but rusty has a good point

If they are next to each other you could pour one slab and line them up with the driveway with a
nice work area in front of them

.02 cents please

I'd build one big building and devide it with a partition. More convient with everything under one roof, and the partition can keep the dust and dirt from the work area off of the cars that are in the storage area.

:iagree: I'd considering a "long" back to back layout with perhaps an interior grage door seperating the two areas, and by all means if $$$ possible utilize the radiate floor heat for both units, then if you wish you can add another suplimental heat source as well. But that "toasty" concrete would be so nice when working on those lower areas of  a project.

Get the extra 2 feet of width also. You'll be glad you did!

Well it also depends on your land set up. I would personally set them up right next to each other and have one for storage of the car and storage of larger parts like body panels. the other side i would keep as free as i could because you never know when something else will need the room

Well,

First off, thanks for all the ideas.  Right now I'm leaning towards 2 seperate workshops.  Reasons are:

1.  I only have to heat one if I want to work.  I have enough heaters for 2.
2.  The space I want to put them is wider than it is long, I may leave enough space between them to park another car and connect the roofs.  Free storage !
3.  I may end up with one shop to work on my cars and one for welding, sheet metal fabrication etc.
4.  It will be easier and cheaper to make the doors and siding for one while the other ( storage ) can be closed up with tarps.

It's still a couple weeks off, have to pour the slab(s) first.  After that it'll take about 3 hrs. each to put up the buildings.

Any other suggestions ?

60 x 40  pole barn     one post in center    upper storage area in rafters      keep the finished car in a car bag, they keep everything out.
Why are the only other cars on the road all in my rear view mirror?  Oh yeah cause I got a 440/6 pack

How much will a 60 X 40 cost ?  I'm gonna end up under 4K.
