Gas tank filler neck
« on: July 31, 2012 - 09:17:33 PM »
There is a flat plate in my filler neck for a barracuda. What does it do? Seems like it might
be a restrictor to keep a nozzle for leaded fuel from fitting in the neck properly. Can anybody confirm this?
If I cant fix it, it's broke

The filler tube has a dent put on it. Never heard of a plate inside of them.

Someone told me that the dented filler tubes were 1970 only.   :dunno:

Challengers have that also. I believe it's so when your filling it air can escape other wise it would glug out ( sorry for the high tech term....glug? )

So you don't think it would get in the way of a gas pump nozzle. I just wondered because
I know when the push was on for cars to go unleaded, the gas pump industry went
to a smaller nozzle.   :clueless:

If you look down the filler neck end you can see the little holes to let air out. Around here when they went to unleaded fuel the actual hole / nozzle was smaller so you couldn't get the leaded fuel nozzle in there.  It was common  for people to make the hole bigger so they could use leaded fuel.

I agree it is so the air comes up when you pump in the gas.

I have that same style filler neck the first time I had to fill up I shoved the nozzle all the way in and had a heck of a time getting it out. I gave one good yank and almost landed on the car behind me. Trust me no matter how cool your car is you will look like an idiot when this happens!  I now only put the nozzle in about half way and it doesn`t get stuck on me.

If I remember correctly.........that end on my filler tube is in the gas tank itself.  Guess it is for air to escape but the end where I put the gas into the tank has the ring with the 4 holes to screw to the body under the fliptop cap.   I know you said it was for a Cuda and they fill from the rear so Guess I'm not much help.....
