Suspension help, 70 Cuda
« on: August 01, 2012 - 09:49:03 AM »
On a drag racing site I'm a member on, we just got a posting from a young guy from Italy asking for advice on how to improve his 60' times with his 70 Cuda. He said his times are 1.99 and only running 11.49 in the 1/4.

Here is a list of his combo:

1970 cuda 440 4 speed
engine 440-500 stroker kit
.040 pistons ross forged
indy EZ heads 295cc all polished
comp cams roller camshaft .670 lift
1.6 Roller rockers harland sharp
indy intake manifold single plane
holley 1050 cfm anular
TTI exhaust headers 2" primary +3.5 magnaflow mufflers
MSD 6al + timing retard +rev limiter 7400 rpm
nitrous oxide +200 HP power shot
A833 4 speed transmission stick
centerforce dual clutch
hardened driveshaft
rear end 8-3/4 4.10:1 + richmond posi
stock leaf springs with alluminium bushing
cal tracs bars with zero preload ( no change with 1/4 turn preload)
rear shock QA1 adjustable at 2 click from soft
front calvert drag shock 90-10
rear tires 29-10.50-15 drag slick M/T m5 compound
front tires 27-4.5-15 MT

He posted some video's of his car and you could clearly see there was no weight transfer, so we suggested the normal, like remove the sway bar, relocate the battery, sub frame connectors, lower air pressure in slicks and also play with shift points. He weighed his car and the front end is extremely heavy so we suggested a weight lose off the front end. Since his car already hosts some Calvert Racing items, I suggested using the split mono's instead of the stock multi's, which he said will come at a later date.

What else could you suggest to get this car down to his goal of 10's or lower?

Some of you may notice that he is using engine parts made by Indy. I have heard pro's and con's about them, but you guys would know better then me. Do you really think this motor, could be putting out 900hp including the 200 shot? He doesn't mention the compression but I'm thinking if his estimate of 900hp is correct, it has to be above 12.5:1.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks and how can I add a avatar to my name? You guys need to have a Camaro running around here.....

Bruce

the problem is definatly in the 60  foot #s , I was running mid 11s but 1.42 in 60 , my experience with Caltrcs has been zero gain , they are worth nothing , I have had better luck using pinion snubbers or adding 1/2 leafs on the front & clamping them with a square top U bolt , moving weight etc . Mopars leave differently , when they transfer weight properly the whole car rises front & back . My solution would be to use a 32" ladder bar with a floater , then you can use any tire & have no traction issues

One of my big concerns with his setup, the picture from the underside of the car, shows the slicks he's running is soooooo close to the multi's.

If he would go to a ladder bar setup, would it be better for him to go with a coil over setup vs the housing floaters?

Chryco Psycho, I saw the was a link to mapleleafbb, you a leaf fan?

I used the leaf spring floater , it gives side to side control & involves less work than coilovers but coil overs are more adjustable & lighter , you would need to re-inforce the frame & add a crossmember for the coilover suspension .
I actually now live in Panama & we are running a B&B here , , I was living in Edmonton in the early 80s & became an Oilers fan , I am not sure the leafs will ever win another cup in my lifetime LOL but I was an leafs fan in the 60s before Vancouver etc
